Northwest Management, Inc. (NMI) is a full-service natural resource consulting firm serving the western United States through permanent offices in Moscow Idaho, Deer Park Washington, and Helena Montana.

Since 1984 NMI has made an organizational commitment to provide accurate field data, science-based research, and publication-level deliverables through our integrated natural resource management services to, federal, state and local agencies, tribes, non-profit organizations, industrial and non-industrial landowners. Our 40 permanent staff and more than 20 field personnel include people highly experienced in all aspects of forestry, hydrology, wildlife, wildfire, and management and environmental policy.

The Inventory Department provides a wide suite of services to both industrial and non-industrial landowners. NMI works with land managers throughout all aspects of inventory including initial stand delineation, timber cruising, compiling cruise data, providing volume estimates, tracking of annual growth and depletions, and providing long-range growth and yield analysis in which forest planning decisions can be made. In addition to these services, NMI annually conducts field inventory for a variety of clientele typically establishing 30,000 – 60,000 inventory plots throughout the western states. 

Position: Inventory Forester

The Inventory Forester will work under the direction of the Inventory Department Manager in providing leadership and direction within the Inventory Department at NMI. This position will help facilitate the quality assurance/quality control of inventory data collected by NMI and assist in the delivery of inventory data to clients. Additionally, this position will work with the Inventory Department Manager to direct day to day operations and monitor project status including production, project costs, revenues, and timeframe for completion. This position will require some field work as well as the training of staff while on inventory projects. It is anticipated the Inventory Forester will be capable of working independently, with minimal supervision. The Inventory Forester must have the ability to manage and track multiple projects concurrently.

Travel Required: 40% - 65%

Minimum qualifications: B.S. in forestry or closely related field and 5 years of inventory experience or two-year degree in forestry or closely related field and 10 years of inventory experience.

Preferred qualifications: B.S. in forestry or closely related field and 10 years of forest inventory experience.

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

• Knowledge of conventional forest inventory methods and proven experience in timber cruising.

• Proficient in GIS, Excel, Word, and Access databases.

• Knowledge of forest inventory software, such as FPS, FVS and Atterbury SuperAce (preferred).

• Knowledge of data collection software (DataPlus)

• Familiar with tree species of the western United States.

• Experience in the application of a variety of silvicultural regimes.

• Comfortable with the use of traditional timber cruising equipment including; Relaskop, D-Tape, Increment Borer, Compass, GPS.

• Basic knowledge of timber sale layout, harvest administration, and harvest systems.

• Requires fieldwork and the ability to move safely over uneven terrain.

• Occasional work demands beyond normal business hours on evenings and weekends. 

Additional Responsibilities Include:

• Manage and/or assist in managing forest inventory projects including bid evaluations, staff assignments, data collection and analysis, and delivery of final product.

• Manage project budgets including revenues, expenses, and profits

• Implement cruise design to meet client needs and objectives

• Work with FPS as appropriate to client and job

• Interact with clients keeping them informed of project status

• Develop relationships with clients and industry professionals

• Help facilitate the development of NMI staff.

• Communicate on a weekly basis with the Inventory Manager and assigned inventory staff as well as the Professional Resource Group Manager as needed.

• Supporting other programs and projects of the company as needed.
