Job Description
Full responsibility for the planning, coordination, and execution of forest inventory, environmental management, silviculture and harvest planning operations associated with the management of a Resource unit.
Financial Management
- Assist in the preparation of the annual operating budget including contracted services, expensed programs and capital programs.
- Track performance and expenditures compared with budgets and objectives on assigned activities.
- Provide support information to develop financial and volume projections for harvesting and silviculture on an annual, quarterly and monthly basis.
- Adapt plans as necessary to achieve desired results. Communicate deviation from projected performance.
- Incorporates financial considerations in the decision making process to effect key business drivers.
- Manage all operational projects in a cost-effective manner to return maximum value.
Planning & Operations
- Assist in the development of operational plans to achieve unit level strategies.
- Support the District Forester in the development of one and five year harvesting plans meeting target volume production while maintaining balanced silvicultural program levels and logging configurations.
- Assist in the development and implementation of the annual inventory plan which will provide accurate, timely and cost-effective information supporting long and short term yield projections and forecasts silvicultural treatment regimes.
- Provide stand level information for the development of the transportation plan.
- Prepare silvicultural plans for reforestation, thinning, herbicide use, animal control, fertilization, surveying and slash management.
- Implement and execute the tactical marketing plan. Refine on-going harvest activities to meet customer commitments and optimize on current conditions.
Contract Administration
- Appraise, negotiate and administer contracts related to silvicultural and harvesting activities.
- Inspect operations to ensure compliance with site activity plans, standard operating procedures, safety requirements and other contractual obligations.
- Ensure log sorting, log quality, delivery targets and site objectives are met from harvest units.
- Review invoices for payment.
Supervision
- Lead and supervise project teams.
- Provide technical training to other employees.
- Coach and mentor lower level employees to excel and grow within or beyond their positions.
- Provide supporting information for the evaluation and management of contractor performance.
- Perform special or occasional duties as required such as public relations activities, presentations, tours and other assigned projects.
Property Management
- Assist the property management team in the development and implementation of property management strategies. This includes parcel selection for acquisition, disposal, trade, harvest sequencing and market timing.
- Assist in the appraisal of properties for acquisition or disposal.
- Manage and administer all assigned non-timber activities. These could include leases, special uses, surveys, adjacent landowner interactions and stakeholder relations.
- Participate in the development and implementation of the recreational use program.
Safety & Environmental
- Actively participate in the compliance of all Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's) by employees and contractors and ensure compliance with safety programs, forest stewardship principals and Best Management Practices (BMP's).
- Participate in Corrective Action Recommendation (CAR) near miss reporting system.
- Participate in professional organizations and associations related to resource management and represent Potlatch in occasional research studies and surveys.
Full-time
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Forestry required; Master's Degree in Forestry preferred.
- At least five (5) years forestry experience required with at least three (3) years of timber harvest knowledge and supervising contractors required.
- Intermediate proficiency in MS Word and Excel, Global Positioning System (GPS) applications and devices, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
- Highly developed multitasking, planning, communication, and organizational skills required.
- Ability to lead a team or project in an efficient manner.
- Developed understanding of key business drivers.
