Professor, Forestry and Urban Forestry (Education/Research)

The successful candidate will be expected to support and foster a sense of collaboration and collegial integrity to provide an outstanding student experience.

Fleming College's Forestry program is the largest in Canada. In the two-year Forestry program, our students acquire the skills to work effectively in natural resources management -  learning traditional forestry skills such as compassing and tree identification, plus how to work with ArcMap, GPS and other high tech software. In the two-year Urban Forestry program, our students acquire the skills to manage trees in urban settings – including propagating and planting trees, maintaining current trees, and developing management plans.

What Are We Looking For:

You possess a relevant combination of education and current, progressive experience. This will ideally include a minimum of a diploma in a Forestry-related field (degree is considered an asset) and 5 years experience in the field.  

You have experience in teaching or training and applied field experience with expertise in areas such as: Dendrology, tree identification, forest inventory, silviculuture, woody plant propagation, tree seed saving, and nut orchard rejuvenation and maintenance. You actively research and keep abreast of current issues and trends related to the forest industry such as seed saving, processing, storage, and germination, climate change adaptations in trees and forests, Green House operations specific to Forestry and Urban forestry propagation, and forest and tree genetics. Along with that, you have experience designing and implementing research activities such as germination trials or growth experiments.

You have demonstrated leadership skills in developing and delivering safe and effective field work experiences including safety training, equipment handling, and related skill development. CPR, First Aid are required with preference for First Responders First Aid certification. You will have practical tree-seed gathering and saving experience.  Certifications such as:  Registered Professional Forester, WSN Chainsaw Trainer, class DZ license, Ontario Tree Marking Certificate, Butternut Health Assessor etc. would be considered assets.

This role requires self-motivation, flexibility and a passion for learning and student success. You have the drive to continuously learn and achieve results.  This position can be physically demanding as you will be assigned to field experiences, including overnight camp in remote locations, in a variety of weather conditions. 

You will contribute to Fleming College’s success by enhancing the student experience in creating a rich and open learning environment that embraces diversity and inclusion, and provides superior service to students.  You are able to apply theories of adult learning and teaching, utilize innovative delivery methods and relevant assessment and evaluation techniques, as well as contribute to curriculum and program development.  You are able to work independently and as part of a team and can effectively contribute to multidisciplinary teams utilizing your strong leadership skills.  Exceptional communication skills, including the ability to deliver and receive feedback, as well as interpersonal and critical thinking/problem solving skills are required.  You are comfortable working with technology, including blended learning technologies, and are self-sufficient with word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software, e-mail, internet search, web applications.  Experience with applied research activities and working in an international context are an asset.  Some international travel may be required.

Compensation

$65,250.00 to $113,115.00 Annually
