Job Summary

Reporting to the Land and Resources Officer, and working in a variety of settings, the Forester provides professional advisory services to forestry related program areas. The Forester is a multi-faceted position, providing professional advisory services in the natural resource management field, including all aspects of decision support to the SDNA. A key component of this position is the ability to build and maintain collaborative partnerships with governments and industry to ensure effective resolution of SDNA land and resource issues. This position will be located at the Southern Dãkelh Nation office in Williams Lake.

Essential Functions and Duties

  • Provides professional advisory services in a scientific discipline as it relates to forest industry practices, forest stewardship plans, forest tenure system, silviculture practices, non-timber forest products/botanicals, cultural heritage resources (CHR), and land use planning.
  • Leads in the development of policy and best management approaches for the SDNA Territory forests, and CHR.
  • Works with provincial government staff and industry to improve policy and management approaches related to SDNA Territory forests, and CHR.
  • Leads and/or participates on various forestry related working groups/committees and provides reports complete with recommendations.
  • Provides professional support and expert advice related to forestry practices, tenure systems, forest stewardship plans, silviculture practices, non-timber forest products/botanicals, cultural heritage resources (CHR) to the SDNA Member Nations.
  • Maintains in-depth knowledge of SDNA current and emerging interests and concerns related to SDNA Territory forests, including forest ecology, CHR management, forestry practices, forest tenure systems, wildfires, forest pests, and forest resilience within SDNA Territory forests.
  • Monitors, evaluates and reports on provincial government data collection, analysis and modelling related to SDNA Territory forests.
  • Works with the SDNA Land and Resource Officer on developing the SDNA Territory Land Stewardship Plan as it relates to forests and forestry practices.
  • Works cooperatively with diverse teams, work groups, First Nation communities, and other organizations.
  • Develops senior-level reports, briefing materials, and presentations.
  • Effectively leads and manages forester consultants working on various SDNA forestry related projects.

Required Education, Skills and Qualifications

  • An undergraduate degree in a forestry with a minimum of three years’ experience related to forestry; or,
  • A technical diploma in forestry with a minimum of five years related experience.

Related experience means a minimum of three OR five years related forestry work (as specified above under essential duties and functions).

  • Registered as an RPF with the Association of BC Forest Professionals, or as a Forester in Training (FIT). Please provide your association registration number with your application.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A Master’s degree in forestry.
  • At least 3 years experience working directly for First Nations in a forestry related role.
  • Experience in negotiating and resolving conflicts with governments and stakeholders in a forestry and/or natural resource management environment.
  • Demonstrated experience with administrative and/or operational activities related to forestry, land tenures, and forest and land legislation.

Required Knowledge and Competencies

  • Proven knowledge of forestry and natural resource management theories, legislation, practices, concepts and processes in BC.
  • Proven competency in reviewing and reporting on industry forest stewardship plans, timber tenures and industry practices.
  • Proven competency in project management, including contract/contractor management.
  • Proven knowledge of a broad range of forest and range practices related to stewardship/resource values (including wildlife, biodiversity, recreation, water, soils resource features, culture heritage, ecology, silviculture practices, forest health, and cumulative effects).
  • Excellent senior level written and verbal communication skills.
  • Adept at establishing and maintaining effective and respectful, working relationships with staff, stakeholders, governments, licensees and the public.
  • Adept at working within a team and individually with minimal supervision.
  • Adept at working in Word, Excel, Power Point, and ARC GIS.
