JOB DESCRIPTION

Western Forest Products is currently seeking a Field Planner to join our North Island Forest Operation (Jeune Landing Location). This position is based out of the Port McNeill office.

POSITION OVERVIEW

This position is responsible for planning, contractor supervision and quality control of silviculture projects. Reporting to the Senior Operations Planner, this highly motivated and physically capable individual will be an integral part of the planning team and assist in the following key functions:

• Support a culture of safety leadership and promotes a respectful workplace

• Participate in a team environment that shares information, welcomes creativity, and challenges the status quo

• Plan, schedule and manage planting programs and other silviculture projects

• Plan, schedule and complete silviculture surveys

• Prepare and peer review the various plans and assessments associated with cutblock development including: o Site Plans; Harvest, Road, Silviculture and Deactivation Instructions; Cutting and Road Permit submissions

• Assist with road and cutblock layout and the associated harvesting plans

• Ensure consistency of the planning process with higher level requirements, government legislation, and CSA certification plans

• Organize and supervise various planning and silviculture consultants

• Experience in using MS Office Suite, Road Eng, Cenfor, ArcView, Forest Ops, and GPS is an asset. All candidates considering this position are strongly encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to Registered Professional Foresters/Registered Forest Technologists with the Association of BC Forest Professionals (ABCFP) however this position may be developed based on the skills and attributes of the ideal candidate. JOB REQUIREMENTS

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

  • 2-5 years of experience in Operations Planning with increasingly responsible roles;
  • Post-secondary degree in Forestry or related degree in Natural Resource Management; and
  • Current accreditation with the Association of BC Forest Professionals (RPF or RFT).

Skills, Knowledge and Required Competencies

  • Excellent understanding and comprehension of Forest Management and Land Use Planning;
  • Proven ability to work in a team environment with good communication skills and an ability to speak confidently in a public setting;
  • Good working knowledge of legal regulations and requirements related to BC crown and private land forest operations;
  • Knowledge of road construction and forest harvesting practices with a strong focus on improving safety, quality, and efficiency; and
  • Experience with forestry software (CENFOR (GENUS), ROAD ENG and Forest Ops) as well as technology (i.e. LiDAR) would be considered an asset.
