District Manager – Milford, Maine

AFM’s Central Maine District has an opening for a District Manager position reporting to the Northeast Region Manager. The position is responsible for the management of 300,000+ acres of large client forest lands as well as other small family forest client lands. Responsibilities include the management of a team of 4-6 employees; development of new client forest consulting and management business; preparation of internal and client budgets; development of proposals for new business; timber harvesting, road construction and maintenance, reforestation oversight; contract negotiation; environmental compliance; and third party SFI certification of client managed lands.

This position works closely with other District Managers, Sales and Marketing Manager, Finance Manager, Roads Coordinator and the Information Resources Forester to ensure client and AFM region goals are achieved. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Either BS in Forestry, Masters in Forestry, or closely related field
  • 10+ years of forestry experience including harvesting, silviculture, road construction, reforestation, and forest inventory
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Supervisory experience
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong listening skills with the ability to translate communications into appropriate course of action
  • Strong analytical and writing skills
  • Maine Professional Forester’s License or the ability to obtain licensure within the first two years of employment
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel; working knowledge of GIS & GPS applications
  • Ability to manage multiple projects under strict time constraints
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize in a fast-paced work environment
  • Ability to work within a team environment
  • Valid driver’s license and insurable driving record 

Work Environment

Office and remote work environment. At times works alone in remote forest lands accessed by private, unimproved roads where off-road driving skills are required. Involves working long periods of time outdoors, sometimes in adverse weather conditions including summer heat and extreme cold. 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Management of a team of 4 to 6 employees for compliance with company mission, vision, core values, and policies
  • Management of team performance and safety culture
  • Preparation of client budgets, annual operating plans, forecasts, and reports
  • Successful completion of client goals and objectives
  • Management and contract negotiation of independent forest operations contractors
  • Successful completion of annual third party SFI audit
  • Development of new business projects
  • Other tasks as assigned by Region Manager
