American Forest Management, Inc. (AFM), a leading provider of forestry and real estate consulting services, is seeking a qualified individual to join our team in Charlotte, N.C. AFM employs over 250 professionals operating from 45 offices located in 16 states with over 5 million acres under management, including operations in the Lake States, Pacific Northwest and Inland Empire, Southeast, Northeast, and internationally.

The successful candidate will work within AFM’s Forest Planning and Analysis Group for AFM and its clients by creating applications to assist in the management of timberland. These applications will enhance forest and tree growth projections, tree merchandising and utilization, forest inventory methods, and forest planning. A responsibility of this position will be to assist in the development, integration, and maintenance of AFM’s growth and merchandising system used for inventory processing and updating in all regions. Another role of the data scientist position is to maintain and further develop a database from which more information applications are derived. Additional responsibilitiesinclude the maintenance and development of applicationsfor forest planning, investment analysis, forest data management, and silvicultural decision support. This position will assist with timberland acquisition analysis and resource planning for clients throughout the AFM operating area. The successful candidate must have excellent communication skills to interpret results and interact with other AFM operating groups and clients.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain forest inventory and other data pertinent to the development of analytical products
  • Establish the methods required to collect the most useful information for data analysis
  • Enhance growth and yield applications in AFM data management and harvest scheduling applications
  • Assist in the incorporation and utilization ofspatial data into AFM systems
  • Develop applications for economic analysis and decision support for AFM and AFM clients

General Experience andQualifications

  • Minimum Bachelor’sDegree in Data Science or equivalent work experience
  • Experience analyzing large spatial datasets
  • Ability to work with internal customers and teammates in developing creative cost‐effective, value‐ added applications
  • Must be able to manage projects independently and work with teams to integrate components in overall project development and implementation

Programming/SoftwareUtilization Skills

  • Minimum Degree in Quantitative Science or closely related field or equivalent work experience
  • Proficiency in R, R‐Studio (Shiny, R‐Markdown)
  • Proficiency in PostgreSQL
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite
  • Proficiency in database design and management
  • Proficiency spatial data manipulation and analysis
  • Knowledge of ESRI, QGIS, and/or Manifold
  • Understanding of computer programming (VB, C, Python, etc.)
