Hours of Work: This position works a standard 35 hour work week.

Business Unit Information

Parks develops and maintains parks, open space, pathways and cemeteries; manages The City's urban forest; and acts as steward of the natural environment, responsible for its protection, preservation, and environmental education.

Responsibilities

This position is responsible for strategic planning and coordination of the Urban Forestry (UF) Portfolio which includes all trees on public lands within The City of Calgary. The Urban Forestry Lead identifies short and long term priorities including city-wide initiatives, identifies associated budget requirements related to Urban Forestry initiatives, and manages all city-wide assets related to The City of Calgary’s Urban Forest. Primary duties include:

·         Responsible to create Urban Forestry strategic and management plans, based canopy analysis and other tools.

·         Set direction for technologies such as soil cells, tree management information systems, tree pest control and other arboriculture techniques.

·         Plan and coordinate City of Calgary's Urban Forest assets.

·         Manage the life cycle maintenance program which includes the removal/replacement programs for all trees on public land; and manages city-wide Urban Forestry functions such as the Pine Creek Nursery.

·         Coordinate and allocate a multi-million dollar operational budget.

·         Manage contractual agreements, including request for proposal (RFP’s), selection, supervision and payment of contractors working on Urban Forestry initiatives, including Pine Creek Nursery, Residential Boulevard and Roadway trees programs.

·         Work with other areas within the Parks Business Unit and with other Business Units to coordinate: city-wide capital requirements related to the Urban Forest; major and minor life-cycle projects; regional park requirements and neighborhood park requirements.

·         Responds to escalated citizen and Council inquiries.

Qualifications

The successful applicant must possess a degree in Forestry or Science (with a major in Horticulture, Forestry or similar area) and a minimum of eight years experience, which includes five years of supervisory experience in an urban forestry program at a municipal level.

Success in this position requires strong strategic planning, financial management and communication skills combined with tact and diplomacy. Additionally, strong interpersonal, leadership, conflict management, political sensitivity and negotiating skills are essential competencies for this position.
