The UBC/Malcolm Knapp Research Forest is seeking three highly motivated students from Forestry, Conservation or Wood Science, to assist our staff with field and office duties for the summer of 2014 (May 1 – Aug 31, 2014). The successful students will work closely with staff members, including the manager, resident forester, research coordinator, and administrative and technical staff on a variety of different tasks including:

  •  Fire patrols and fire suppression
  •  Silviculture surveys, assessments and maintenance of plantations
  •  Data entry and updating of GIS layers
  •  Site plan field data collection and work
  •  Routine research project maintenance
  •  Recreational trail enhancement, interpretation and extension
  •  Supervision of visiting international volunteer students

 

Candidates should have basic knowledge of surveying techniques, fire suppression, silviculture surveys and ArcGIS. All candidates must have current, first aid (WCB Level 1) certification and a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License. The positions will require working outdoors in all weather conditions.

The positions will be full-time, five days per week (Thursday - Monday), 7.5 hours per day, from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm.

Compensation

Classification: Undergraduate Research Assistant - $3,300/month
