Job Description: 

The National Park Service Southeast Coast Inventory and Monitoring Network (SECN) (http://science.nature.nps.gov/im/units/SECN) is tasked with developing and implementing a long-term ecological monitoring program at 18 parks in the Southeastern U.S. The primary task of the program is to determine the ecological condition of park resources to allow park managers to continually improve management and affect the NPS mission of preserving our park lands "unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations". This is accomplished through monitoring attributes of a select suite of water, air, geological, vegetation, and wildlife resources, and the various ecological, biological, and physical processes that act on those resources. This position is located in the National Park Service SECN Headquarters office in Whitehall Forest. Communications Intern: SECN seeks a communication intern (undergraduate) for our headquarter offices in Athens, GA. This is a half-time, or 20 hour-per-week, position is anticipated to start the fall semester 2015. Position Overview and Tasks: The selected candidate will integrate current SECN monitoring data into educational and outreach products. The intern will be work on projects that expand the usefulness of SECN monitoring data for researchers, interpreters, educators and resource managers who work with parks in the southeast. Products may include newsletters, online content and other material that will improve stewardship, youth engagement, community outreach, or other functional groups of the NPS. Assist with the development of science outreach products that improve the connections between scientific data and NPS staff at multiple park units. Develop content for internal newsletters.

Qualifications: 

 

  • Requirements: The ideal candidate would have the following qualities: 
  • Detail-oriented and self-motivated, and works well with teams as well as independently 
  • Ability to distill and summarize natural resources data 
  • Ability to independently research potential causes and solutions to problems 
  • Ability to coordinate literature reviews on natural resources topics 
  • Has an interest in ecology or resource management 

 

Strong written and verbal skills The research assistant will be officially supervised by SECN’s Program Manager, but will be executing assignments in support of a variety of physical science and ecological studies that fall under the purview of SECN scientists and managing editor. As such, the incumbent must be able to speak and write clearly to multiple audiences. The selected candidate must be very organized, be able to manage a docket of diverse assignments, and must be comfortable handling multiple tasks simultaneously, sometimes with shifting priorities. Mandatory Qualifications: This internship is open to undergraduate students at the University of Georgia. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office applications. It is essential that applicants have strong communication skills (written and oral), a strong work ethic, and good organizational skills. The successful applicant should be able to pass a federal background check.
