Description:

Reporting to the Technical Manager, the Technical and Process Coordinator is responsible for coordinating all day-to-day requirements of the Technical and Process department, supervising lab technicians and coordinating site quality assurance testing processes as required by APA / CE.  The Technical and Process Coordinator relies on leadership abilities, knowledge of quality control / analysis processes and a continuous improvement mindset in order to support and promote excellence as established in the Company vision, mission and values.

Collaborating With: 

Internal:  Production Team, Maintenance Team, Health, Safety and Environment Manager, peers at other sites

External:  Vendors / Suppliers, APA, Manitou Forest Products

People Reporting To This Position: Quality Control Technicians 

Primary Responsibilities and Measurables (including but not limited to): 

  • Oversee testing requirements for all customers and specific products which involves reviewing testing reports (including panel reports) on a daily basis and the weekly submission of the RTQA report (Real Time Quality Assurance) to the APA.
  • Assist in the planning and design of research and development, process improvements, specialty testing and new technologies which involves coordinating with Team Leaders to determine workload requirements.
  • Inspect all off-grade products which involves conducting a variance investigation, coordinating further product testing and submitting a non-conformance reports to the Technical and Process Manager for every off-grade product.
  • Supervise all maintenance activities as related to the Quality Department.Maintain raw material inventories of resins, waxes, powder and MDI which involves conducting weekly inventory audits and ordering material as required. 
  • May involve off-loading raw material or scheduling team members to off-load materials as needed.
  • Dispose of / ensure appropriate handling of / submit near-miss reports for all chemical spills in area of control which may involve coordinating additional resources (depending on severity of spill).
  • Work with Shift Process Technicians, Team Leaders, Process Improvement Coordinators and others as appropriate towards achieving and maintaining plant target for on grade percentage.
  • Implement / design / utilize / enforce proactive safety as required which involves attending all safety meetings and disseminating information to direct reports directly following the safety meeting.
  • Ensure that direct reports have been trained on and have reviewed correct work practices prior to operating machinery which involves reviewing and updating the Correct Work Procedure Manual on an annual basis.
  • Provide guidance, direction, mentoring and progressive discipline (if required) to direct reports which involves maintaining documentation of all relevant information, coaching and assisting direct reports to enhance skills and conducting one formal performance appraisal for each employee per year. 

Knowledge: 

  • Post secondary education in Engineering or Wood Science preferred. 5+ years of supervisory experience in a manufacturing environment preferred. 4 years of experience in OSB quality control department.
  • Experience in forest products manufacturing industry preferred. General knowledge of process operation and incident investigation. Knowledge of OH&S standards.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of team processes and ability to model, encourage and influence team behavior and decision making. Demonstrated proficiency of required computer applications.

Work Environment: 

  • The position is office based but requires a large degree of time spent in the mill environment.
  • The position requires flexible work hours (as the job and board quality requires) and on-call work to provide evening and weekend plant support as required. 

Compensation
