Fibria Innovations is a Burnaby, BC based Canadian company and a wholly owned subsidiary of Fibria Cellulosa (Brazil) – the world’s largest producer of market pulp.  Fibria Innovations is undertaking the development of bio-refining technologies for the production of pulp and other renewable chemicals and advanced materials from non-food cellulosic biomass feedstocks. Our solvent based bio-refinery technology is transformative, facilitating the rapid high-yield conversion of a variety of types of biomass into their principle components – cellulose, lignin and hemicelluloses and thus providing unique flexibility in our product mix.  Having operated our Burnaby pilot facility since 2008, we are ready for commercial deployment of the technology and have an immediate opportunity within our Engineering Team.

Primary Responsibilities of the position:

  • Develop and execute plans to assess and optimize processing conditions for bench through pilot plant scale equipment to identify and optimize conditions usable for larger scaled commercial designs.
  • Perform equipment scale-up from Pilot Plant to Commercially Scaled Unit.
  • Develop process design including specification of process conditions, equipment sizing, materials of construction and control strategy.
  • Conduct Process Simulation Studies to evaluate processing options and impacts.
  • Perform pinch analysis as part of process optimization.
  • Evaluate vendor equipment packages and recommend selections.
  • Generate, review and/or modify Operating Procedures, Operating Manuals, Shutdown and Start-up Checklists and other procedures.
  • Participate in HAZOP and similar safety related studies.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and document activities described above.

Qualifications/Experience:

  • Recognized Chemical Engineering degree, PEng.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience including process design and operations, preferably in the petrochemical, oil refining, chemical, pulp & paper and alcohols industries.
  • Previous experience with process modeling and simulation tools most desirable
  • Previous experience with bio-refining desirable
  • Previous experience with technology development and scale up of pilot plant equipment to commercial capacity an asset
  • Effective English communication skills (written and oral)
  • Good organizational & interpersonal skills
