The Division works to manage sustainable forests by ensuring forests are managed in accordance with government outcomes and policy intent; supports development of forestry related policies; oversees forest management and planning; advocates for forest industry competitiveness; leads and delivers wildfire management activities; monitors and responds to environmental emergencies.
        
As a Senior Forester, you are responsible for leading the Timber Planning team in Fort McMurray to resolve Forest Management issues and to administer resource management and risk management activities on the proposed landscape. In your role, the main focus is planning, ensuring consistent application and standards, recommending course of action and overall strategy for the Lower Athabasca Region. As lead of projects with delegated authority, you will negotiate and provide decisions in defence of actions for Forest Management and Land Management positions, and work closely with compliance assurance and operations approvals toward the delivery of programs and initiatives.

A broad multi-disciplinary thinker with knowledge of timber management, ability to analyze situations, assess options and implications, adapt to circumstances, and provide a link between strategic level goals, policies, procedures, priorities for the delivery of cross-boundary programs and in resolving cross-boundary issues. Decisions and recommendations are typically complex and involve interpretation and/or application of legislation, regulations, policies or procedures.

To be successful in this role you will need excellent verbal and written communication, relationship building and organization skills. You must have the ability to work independently, as well as the ability to work collaboratively with a variety of internal and external stakeholders. Knowledge of planning and development processes along with initiative, creativity, systems thinking, strong attention to detail, and decision making abilities are required. Your strong project planning and time management skills will enable you to lead team members to prioritize multiple tasks of the work unit to meet deadlines, and to positively influence staff through mentoring and coaching will help create staff engagement and ensure staff and the program are successful.

    ABOUT YOUR WORK ENVIRONMENT:

    As the successful candidate, you will be operating out of an office setting in Fort McMurray. Travel within the region and throughout the province will be required as part of your responsibilities. You will have frequent contact with Ministry staff and colleagues, other government departments, clients, and external stakeholders province-wide.
            
    Qualifications:
     

    A degree in Forestry or Natural Sciences supplemented with six years directly related experience or a diploma in Forestry or Natural Sciences supplemented with ten years directly related experience. Candidates must be eligible for registration with the College of Alberta Professional Foresters or Forest Technologists. Supervisory experience considered an asset. A valid Class 5 Driver's License is required. Secondments and Alternative Work Arrangements considered. Equivalencies will be considered. Candidates with lesser qualifications may be considered at a lower classification and salary.

    Salary: $2,783.38 - $3,601.99 bi-weekly ($72,646 - $94,011 per annum).
