Scaler (Forestry, Logging & Mill Operations)

White River Forest Products Ltd currently has an opening for a Scaler in our woodyard operations. 

The successful candidate will maintain the quality control of the incoming logs, control the log yard and related inverntory, as well as ensure truck drivers comply with rules and regulations when delivering logs. 

Role Requirements:

1.1    Primary Focus

·         Ensures quality and quantity of wood supply entering mill is according to established standards and consistent with contractual and government regulations.

1.2    Accountabilities

·         Ensures all government and company statutes, rules, regulations and policies with respect to evaluating log characteristics and determining defects are carried out satisfactorily.

·         Ensures accuracy of scale, related IT software and reports

·         Conducts all sample scaling for calculation of weight volume factors to a 2% margin and records data

·         Maintains an accurate yard inventory of wood on a monthly basis and provides report showing supplies, volumes, factors, deductions and any other pertinent or relative data

·         Visits forestry operations to ensure compliance with sawmill requirements and specs

·         Maintains positive relationships with suppliers to ensure the systems are used properly and consistently

·         Assists in determining deductions and scaling evaluations with MNR

·         Communicates with sawmill personnel to ensure efficient planning of receipts, quality evaluations and other related issues

·         Adheres to and promotes company safety rules

·         Monitors cost and quality of wood entering mill and makes recommendations on how to improve operations to reduce cost of wood fibre

Aptitude Characteristics:

2.1  Education and aptitudes

·         Valid Scaler’s Licence/Certificate

·         Experience in log scaling

·         Knowledgeable and experienced with Microsoft Office and use of electronic data systems

·         Bilingualism:   English and French (oral and written) an asset

·         Demonstrate good judgement

·         Knowledgeable of tree species and characteristics

2.2   Personality Requirements (E.Q.)

·         Must be able to work with diverse individuals and cope positively with stress

·         Strong commitment to doing job efficiently

·         Able to work with little supervision
