EACOM Timber Corporation is a major Eastern Canadian wood products company formed in 2008. Its head office is located in Montreal, Quebec, with regional offices located in Timmins, Ontario and Val d'Or, Quebec. In 2010, EACOM acquired Domtar Forest Products Division. As a result, its operations include the manufacturing, marketing and distribution of lumber and wood-based value-added products, and the management of forest resources.

EACOM currently owns seven sawmills (5 in Ontario, 2 in Quebec), a remanufacturing facility (Quebec) and a partnership operation in an engineered I joist plant (Ontario) for a total of 800 employees. Many of these mills have a long, rich history having been part of their communities for over 100 years.

EACOM has a production capacity of approximately 900 million board feet of lumber and holds Crown logging rights of approximately 3.5 million cubic meters annually.

For our operations of Nairn Center, we are looking to hire a Sawmill Manager that will be responsible for managing mill operations by focusing on customer satisfaction at the lowest possible cost.  The incumbent will carry out his duties by using the available human resources, financials and material.  He will maintain and improve competitiveness and profitability of the operating unit.

Job description:

  • Will manage a group of approximately 100 people within a unionized context.  Will plan, organize, direct, coordinate and control mill activities including activities to support production (quality, shipping, maintenance, health and safety, human resources, environment and ISO)
  • Prepare and submit operating budgets and capital expenses.  Manage approved budgets in order to attain determined performance indicators (health and safety frequency, fiber consumption, transformation costs, hourly productivity, product quality, on-time delivery)
  • Develop and maintain a work climate that favors the mobilization and commitment of human resources including internal and external partners.  Assure staff development by optimal use of their skills.
  • Determine the number and type of continuous improvement activities required to attain and exceed performance indicators.
  • Optimize the saw line/planer and adapt other production components in order to maximize productivity or remedy operating difficulties.  (Controlling stacking quality, drying schedules, round wood inventory (humidity/diameter) and inventory rotation.
  • Implication in organizational changes, hiring of new staff and to ensure that supervisors have required training and certification. (lumber training is mandatory for the position)
  • Coordinate the service and manufacturing equipment suppliers in order to optimize maintenance and maximize operation.
  • Responsible for OFIA representation as well as Lumber marking quality.
  • Responsible for dealing with regulating authorities and ensure the company is compliant. (Mol, Moe, Esa, Mot, Insurance, Pressure vessel and lumber graders)

Requirements

  • 5 to 7 years in a similar position or 7 to 10 years in the sawmill industry within various positions.
  • Experience working in a sawmill business with financial and labor relations concepts responsibilities. (Asset)
  • Previous experience in a union environment. (Must)
  • Knowledge and ability in utilizing computerized systems. (Must)
  • Must be able to accept and respond to after hour's calls, work weekends/holidays as needed.
  • Must enjoy living and working in a northern community.
