PROJECT ENGINEER – LEVEL II

Reporting to the Superintendent, Engineering the Project Engineer is accountable for the successful completion of assigned projects within budgeted time and cost controls; the Project Engineer must have a goal for ensuring timelines for project plans are met. You will be an experienced mechanical / industrial engineer with a proven track record of leading various capital projects in the pulp & paper industry. Engineers with electrical or chemical designation with suitable industrial experience may also be considered.

The current focus at QRP is around energy efficiency / conservation. Recent projects include: a $16M low-consistency refiner installation; high-efficiency effluent heat exchangers; variable frequency pump upgrades; a new steam separator. A significant number of safety, production, and maintenance / reliability related projects are in progress as well.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Analyze project costs, estimation, scheduling and construction resources. 
  • Coordination and checking of engineering deliverables.
  • Responsible for technical and management of projects.
  • Acts as a liaison between mill, department heads and contractors.
  • Provides technical guidance, maintains standards; acts as subject matter expert within department
  • Performs standard engineering assignments to support projects including new installations and modifications to existing facilities. Comfortable handling a wide variety of projects with energy, safety, production, and maintenance drivers
  • Supports / oversees operational activities such as equipment assessment, materials validation, trouble shooting, and preparing operational procedures and guidelines.
  • Directs / participates in the preparation of feasibility assessments, economic risk studies and soundness of proposed engineering evaluation tests, products or equipment.
  • Takes leadership role in specific phases of engineering assignment and activities; ensures best practice methodology and related tools are utilized within department
  • Collaborates with leadership team related to project assessment, definitions and cost estimating; discuss strategies for application hearings, scope, content and format of applications. Leads the production of engineering components of designated applications
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Previous, progressive experience in an industrial environment
  • Registered or eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer with APEGBC
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities.
  • Ability to provide technical leadership to junior staff 
  • Excellent communication skills – both written and oral
  • Strong interpersonal and self-management skills are required, plus the ability to work either independently or as a team member.
  • Excellent computer knowledge
  • A strong problem solver and coach

CONSIDERED A STRONG ASSET:

  • Minimum 7-10 years’ experience in in pulp & paper industry
  • PMP designation a definite asset.
