The Department of Forest Resources Management in the Faculty of Forestry at the University of British Columbia (UBC), Vancouver, Canada invites applications from outstanding individuals for a full-time, tenured position in urban forestry. The appointment will be made at the level of Professor.  The successful candidate will be responsible for the strategic direction and quality of a flagship program in Urban Forestry at UBC.  The position will champion urban forestry within and outside the Faculty, and will be expected to lead and contribute meaningfully to the development and implementation of graduate and undergraduate Urban Forestry programs.

 

The UBC Faculty of Forestry conducts national and international research, and provides undergraduate and postgraduate education in forest management, forest sciences, conservation science and management, urban forestry, wood science and wood products processing. The Faculty is building an innovative and holistic Urban Forestry Program that emphasizes planning and management of forest and green-space systems, integrating social, ecological and economic factors in urban and peri-urban landscapes.

 

Candidates for this position must have a Ph.D. in a relevant field, over 10 years of experience in urban forestry-related education and/or practice, and an internationally recognized profile in teaching and research in urban forestry.  It is expected that the successful candidate will: 1) have responsibility for maintaining the overall vision for urban forestry at UBC, including overall program goals, curriculum, quality of teaching and research, and development of future research directions; 2) develop and deliver courses in the Faculty’s Urban Forestry Program, and provide leadership on development and establishment of a new degree program at the graduate level; 3) develop a robust research program in one or more innovative aspects of urban forestry; 4) develop and maintain strong relations with UBC’s School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (SALA),  School of Population and Public Health (Faculty of Medicine) and other relevant units such as those in the School of Community and Regional Planning and the Faculty of Applied Sciences; 5) liaise with faculty in Landscape Architecture and Environmental Design on program delivery/development; 6) liaise with communities, government, and professional organizations in mobilizing urban forestry knowledge.

 

Demonstrated experience in leading and directing major educational programs in Urban Forestry and/or related fields such as urban landscape planning is essential, together with experience in curriculum development.  The candidate must also have a proven track record of high quality research and publishing in urban forestry internationally.  He or she should be familiar with global urban forestry institutions and practice, and be knowledgeable on new developments in health and wellbeing related to urban green spaces. The candidate must also have excellent teaching skills, and have demonstrated excellent and sustained organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
