Operations Forester (Forestry, Logging & Mill Operations)

OPERATIONS FORESTER 

POSITION OBJECTIVE – the Operation Forester position provides direct oversight and direction for all management  activities on their assigned areas. The operations forester is responsible for the coordination of management  activities with other members of the management team and ensuring that the mission, vision and values of Seven Islands and the objectives of the landowners are achieved.

REPORTS TO – Unit Manager

CRITICAL FUNCTIONS & UNDERLYING TASKS

Leadership

  • Maintain and demonstrate a deep understanding of company mission, vision and values across all sectors of position’s responsibility – operations, management and inter-company relations.
  • Instill in all service contractors an understanding and appreciation for the company’s management philosophy and environmental values.
  • Strive to demonstrate the pursuit of excellence in the execution of all management activities – TQS, PEP and E 3.
  • Maintain open communicative environment across the unit – communicate company issues, plans and news with unit manager and unit foresters. 

E 3 Philosophy

  • Manage and execute all aspects of management consistent with E 3 Philosophy.
  • Communicate and instill E 3 Philosophy with contractors.
  • Communicate success to leadership team of all improvements made through E 3 Program.

Contractor  Relations & Supervision

  •  Establish and maintain an environment of Continual Improvement with all service providers.
  • Expect compliance with the Performance Enhancement Program from all contractors.
  • Instill and support Seven Islands’ philosophy of excellence in all service contractors.
  • Maintain open and constructive relations with all service contractors.
  • Emphasize the role of E 3 Philosophy in negotiating with all service contractors.

Unit Finances

  • Plan and conduct management to ensure compliance with financial projections.
  • Seek and initiate innovative ideas and methods that can improve financial results.
  • Work with unit manager to improve unit efficiencies.

Unit Management Planning

  • Conduct Five Year Planning consistent with company policies and management objectives.
  • Ensure planning process is consistent with E 3 Philosophy
  • Work with VP Woodlands, GIS and Forest Information Director to develop long-term management program structure.

DUTIES & DELIVERABLES

The Operations Forester is responsible for developing the management plans and the comprehensive execution of those plans at the township and operations level. Successful achievement of the position’s Critical Functions and Underlying Tasks will result in the meeting the position’s duties and deliverables.

Understand and support Seven Islands’ - Mission,  Vision, Values and E 3 Philosophy

Development of 5 Year Plan – harvest, road, silvicultural

Development of the annual operation plan:

  • Predict specie/product flow from planned area.
  • Silvicultural plan consistent with company policy
  • Filing appropriate permit and notifications
  • Plan and carry out State operations plans associated with regulated areas – LURC, IF&W
  • Plans are consistent with certification requirements.

Operations Execution & Supervision

  • Layout harvest areas
  • Develop silvicultural prescriptions consistent with company policies and management program.
  • Plan and locate efficient road access.
  • Monitor and ensure product sorts and specifications.
  • Conduct periodic (weekly, bi-monthly) performance evaluations (PEP) of contractors.

Contractor Relations

  • Supervise contractor harvest, trucking and road operations
  • Guide and supervise contractor achievement of PEP results
  • Work with contractors to increase contractor efficiency and effectiveness
  • Educate contractor concerning Seven Islands’ policies
  • Seek to establish and maintain a cooperative and constructive work environment.

Budgeting, Tracking & Reporting

  •  Monitor operations progress – road, silviculture, harvesting
  • Work with unit manager to track and monitor revenues and expenditures
  • Track volume flow

Manage Harvest Operations

  • Designing, execute and manage harvest plan.
  • Track and monitor harvest program for compliance with company policies.

Environmental Management

  • Ensure operational compliance with environmental  standards
  • FSC and SFI operations standards

Certification Programs –

  • Ensure unit compliance with company certification program
  • Instruct

Maintain Company Facilities and Property

  • Maintain inventory of unit property
  • Supervise maintenance of company property – vehicles, facilities etc.

Public Relations

  • Present a positive public image of Seven Islands
