MS and PhD Research Assistantships (Health, Safety & Training)

Internship

  University of Idaho (http://www.uidaho.edu)

  Moscow, Idaho, United States

One MS and one PhD Assistantship are available in the Forest Operations Research Lab at the University of Idaho. Research Assistants will work as part of new grant funded by the CDC/NIH National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to reduce fatal and near-fatal logging accidents in the Pacific Northwest.

In this research, we are working closely with logging contractors to characterize the human factors that lead to fatal and near-fatal accidents. We are then evaluating the use of real-time multi- transmitter GPS systems for characterizing situations that lead to safety hazards in order to identify acceptable and unacceptable uses of the technology.

We will evaluate positional accuracy in a series of designed experiments and develop methods for analysis of multi transmitter GPS data acquired in a range of common logging scenarios.

The successful applicants will work as part of a team with CO-PI’s that include faculty in Forest Operations, Extension Forestry, and Remote Sensing, as well as two MS students and several undergraduate research technicians.

Field work will be conducted at various field sites in the Pacific Northwest and on the University of Idaho Experimental Forest.

An out-of-state tuition waiver, fees and full time graduate assistantship is available. The assistantship is approximately $19,800 / yr for 3 years and includes support for travel and field expenses.
