MECHANICAL ENGINEER POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Engineering Manager, the Mechanical Engineer is responsible for equipment inspections, non-destructive thickness testing and the supervision of contractors and site personnel. The Mechanical Engineer will provide technical assistance to plant crews and contractors.

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Prepare and interpret conventional and computer-assisted design (CAD) engineering designs, drawings, and specifications for pulp and paper machines and mill components

• Assist in the preparation of cost and material estimates, project schedules and reports

• Assist in the preparation of quotes

• Provide technical information to other departments as required

• Assist in the conducting of tests and analyses of machines, components and materials to determine their performance, strength, response to stress and other characteristics

• Perform calculations and analyses to assist in the design of machine components for use in the pulp and paper manufacturing processes

• Assist in the monitoring and inspection of mechanical installations, construction and maintenance of pulp and paper mill equipment

• Assist in the supervision of sub-contractors and/or customer staff

• Work closely with the mechanical design team to ensure working plans and technical drawings meet project specifications and goals.

• Develop and direct project plans with the Manager of Engineering, ensuring that project budget, schedules, and requirements are met.

Working with the engineering team to propose, plan and execute projects.

Initiate engineering studies to solve plant problems.

This could include meeting with stakeholders to determine goals, examine alternatives, develop possible solutions and make recommendations.

Provide technical assistance to plant crews and contractors to ensure work is done in a professional manner and/or work is done to plant standards and applicable government rules and regulations;

Inspection of equipment, structures and vessels to determine state of maintenance, safety and operability.

EXPERIENCE

Sound knowledge of mechanical and civil engineering design principals;

5 + years process plant experience preferred

Proficient in creating general layout and fabrication drawings.

Superior interpersonal and communication skills suited to a high performance, team based environment are essential;

Computer proficiency in a Windows environment using MS Office, project, spreadsheets and databases is desirable;

Understanding of thermodynamics, calculus, machine design and fluid mechanics

WORKING CONDITIONS

Occasional exposure to chemicals, heat, steam, wood dust and noxious gases will be encountered

This position will require the incumbent to occasionally work in areas of high noise levels, for sometimes extended periods of time.
