The Secretariat of the Haida Nation (SHN ) is seeking an experienced Heritage & Natural Resource Manager to join their team in Massett, Haida Gwaii, BC.

Reporting to the Stewardship Director, the HNRD Manager uses independence and initiative to plan, organize, implement, maintain and evaluate the delivery of comprehensive programs, budgets and services within the Heritage and Natural Resource Department.

The Manager maintains firm control of all budgets, supervision of professional, support staff, independent decision making within clearly defined department/project confines, reporting responsibility to the Stewardship Director, Secretariat of the Haida Nation (SHN) and Council of the Haida Nation (CHN) on a continuous basis.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement and maintain programs, budgets, and work plans within the Heritage and Natural Resource Department
  • Demonstrate effective management of human, financial and information resources by researching, developing, implementing and monitoring relevant operation timelines and schedules that includes the yearly, quarterly, monthly, weekly timelines and schedules
  • Supervise the designated Heritage and Natural Resource Department’s Project Managers, Field Supervisors and Support staff to ensure they are fulfilling their duties and responsibilities to programs and services of the Heritage and Natural Resource Department
  • Ensure that existing policies, procedures, regulations for delivery of HNRD programs and services are followed and to continue to develop policies, procedures and/or regulations where required for the efficient delivery of programs and services
  • Assess departmental, staffing and fiscal needs of the Heritage and Natural Resource Department‘s programs and services annually and bring forward recommendations to the SHN Board for their review and approval
  • The HNRD Manager is assigned as the Haida Gwaii Management Council’s (HGMC) Haida Implementation Coordinator accountable to the Council of the Haida Nation - this includes project management, overseeing the people, places and things associated with the inputs and outputs of the HGMC
  • Participate as one of the Haida Stewardship Managers on the Integrated Manager’s Team, with the Haida Gwaii District Managers
  • Work with the CHN and SHN assigned staff on Haida Gwaii Protected Area planning and management initiatives
  • Responsible and accountable for researching, developing, and maintaining the Heritage  and Natural Resource Department related hard copy and electronic files and folders
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing to the Secretariat of the Haida Nation, the Council of the Haida Nation, and (when directed) to outside agencies and the public
  • Preparation of written summaries  of the Heritage and Natural Resource Department activities on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis to the SHN and CHN
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Stewardship Director

      Qualifications:

  • Have a Master’s Degree or a Bachelor’s Science Degree in Forestry or in a similar discipline or an acceptable combination of education and experience in the field of Forestry or Natural Resource Management
  • Have a minimum of five’s years’ experience in the management of Forestry initiatives with administrative duties and responsibilities similar to those required for this position
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Haida Governance, Federal and Provincial regulations that govern the Forest, Lands and Waters
  • Must have sound personnel practices, organizational development, and knowledge of employment standards/law, program budgeting, program planning, program development of human and financial resources
  • Have the ability to read, understand departmental financial statements, convert to updated budget reports, and adjust accordingly on a continuous basis throughout the fiscal year
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office software: Word, Excel, Power Point, and Outlook to carry out all administrative reports, budget updates, and internal/external communications
