Hays are proud to be partnered with West Fraser, Canada’s leading diversified forest products producer to conduct a search for a Safety Manager – Pulp for their corporate office in Quesnel, British Columbia. This job offers the opportunity to supervise multiple operations and continue to initiate and monitor the safety programs of the business. 

Reporting to the Operations Manager for the Mechanical Pulp Division, the position will have oversight of the health and safety for four mills, requiring an experienced leader to continue West Fraser’s impressive safety record. The successful candidate will partner with the management at each of the sites and will be responsible for ensuring the consistent implementation of internal safety procedures, the OH&S Act, Code and Regulations. The Manager, Pulp Safety will work on the safety management systems of the business, including developing training programs, accident prevention, industrial hygiene, dust control and accident investigation. 

The position will require the successful candidate to assist with regulatory appeals, such as OH&S orders, Administrative Penalties, Tickets and WCB Assessments. Where appropriate, the Manager will liaise with external bodies such as WorkSafeBC, the Alberta Workers Compensation Board, and Alberta Workplace Health and Safety as well as other relevant industry bodies. Working closely with the Corporate Safety Manager, the position will ultimately help to shape West Fraser’s corporate policies and ensure they remain a market leader. 

To be suitable for this role, you will have a strong background in Occupational Health and Safety, ideally with a Diploma or Bachelor’s level qualification in safety or science. Given the seniority of this role, the successful candidate will have at least seven years of industry experience, with at least three in a management role. The Manager, Pulp Safety must have a detailed understanding of BC and Albertan Health and Safety Regulations, including the OH&S Act, Code and Regulations, ANSI and NFPA. Prior experience in the forestry or pulp industries would be beneficial but is not a requirement of the role. You must be an effective communicator who is comfortable dealing with all levels of the business, with a passion for progressing in the health and safety field.
