Lumber Scheduler / Transportation Supervisor (Forestry, Logging & Mill Operations)

POSITION PURPOSE

The Lumber Scheduler/Transportation Supervisor is responsible for maintaining a safe work environment by ensuring all safety rules and procedures are followed.  Provide appropriate effective leadership for all employees that are reflective of California Redwood Company (CRC) with an emphasis on safety, employee communication, teamwork, and employee involvement.  Ensures the proper quantity and quality of all types of lumber is available and delivered as required by the Sales Department and production centers on time.  Must effectively schedule and forecast lumber to help assure on-time shipments and to provide an accurate “lumber availability” schedule/inventory to the Sales Department.  Manage all inter and intra-plant lumber flow and direct all customer shipments.  Oversees’ trucking contractors, ensuring the smooth flow of residuals and intercompany deliveries.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Lumber Scheduler/Transportation Supervisor Functions

  • Directs hourly employees which load customer trucks, rail cars, transferring lumber to air yard, green lumber yard, planer, out-feed of sawmill, finished goods inventory and trucking removal of residuals.
  • Communicates the flow of lumber from sawmill through the air yard/kilns and planers to plant personnel.
  • Coordinates inventory and arranges transportation for internal lumber transfers. Works with the shipping coordinators at internal and external facilities to insure timely and accurate movement of lumber.
  • Tracks sawmill timber cutting orders, communicate as necessary with sawmill personnel.
  • Coordinates employee lumber purchases, lumber donations and plant lumber usage. Tracks usage in RLS/Internal sales system for invoicing.
  • Assures the safe, timely and proper transportation and movement of lumber and lumber products through assigned personnel.
  • Assures forklifts and trucks are in safe operating condition and operators are trained.
  • Performs daily planer and/or shipping “walk through” inspections of lumber quality to assist in quality assurance.
  • Flexible in scheduling options to meet changing market conditions.
  • Anticipates supply needs, continually monitor, maintain and evaluate office and safety supplies for use at Korbel plant.
  • Schedules sawmill, kiln and planer runs in RLS.
  • Maintains “Kiln cards” system.
  • Analyzes forecasting results and update RLS forecast yield tables to assure lumber availability accuracy.
  • Schedules “Run-To-Order” items for on time shipments.
  • Assures accurate lumber inventories through reconciling sawmill and planer tallies as well as performing physical inventory checks on an as needed basis to assure proper inventory control and accuracy. Communicate to appropriate personnel tally discrepancies to correct ongoing problems.
  • Produces and Audits daily remanufacturing planer and sawmill production reports and planer run analysis for accuracy.
  • Inventory and report usage monthly of packaging supplies such as lumber tags, unit wrap paper, and strapping as well as kiln boiler oil. Ensures lumber packaging supplies are ordered in a timely manner.
  • Monitors actual sawmill and planer run comparison’s to forecast.
  • Maintains RLS yield tables.  Check input and output volume on all run analysis.
  • Works closely with marketing and mill personnel to monitor and ensure that the highest value and recovery is obtained from the resource.
  • Maintains strong working relationships with the Maintenance Superintendent, Planer Superintendent, Quality Control /Drying, and Planer Supervisors.

Other Functions

  • Ensure adequate level of safety training and awareness in full compliance with Company policies and practices and in support of operational safety goals.
  • Must know lumber grades and provide accurate and timely lumber forecasts.
  • Regular contact with: vendors, suppliers, outside sales representatives, and contractors.

KNOWELDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

  • 7-10 years planer tallying, lumber scheduling or related lumber manufacturing experience.
  • High School Diploma.
  • Business training at the college level desired.
  • Extensive experience with creating and using spreadsheet programs.
  • Familiar with industry terminology, equipment, software and lumber manufacturing processes.
  • A developed and comprehensive knowledge of lumber mill manufacturing equipment to assist in proper inventory controls is desired.
  • Customer service oriented approach and personality.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Travel to other CRC/CRCD facilities, development training courses, etc.
  • Physical expectations: regular walking and standing, moderate sitting, little climbing.
  • Requires the use of standard safety equipment in regulation with CRC.
  • Industrial manufacturing setting which requires being able to maneuver around working and moving equipment.
