Log Scaler Inventory Control Lead (Forestry, Logging & Mill Operations)

SUMMARY: Provides leadership in the log yard assuring log quality, resolution to log quality issues internally and externally by following sawmill operation’s quality standards and certification policies, maintaining accurate inventory control using log inventory software.  

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to the following. Other duties may be assigned. 

  •  Coordinates operations daily with the Sawmill Supervisor; routinely communicates with Shipping Supervisor to monitor log usage; maintains accurate level of log yard inventory; 
  •  Leads and trains employees in the log yard to perform activities such as sorting, scaling, decking, and inventorying logs; 
  •  Schedules equipment operators, scalers, and adjust work procedures to meet production schedules and to keep logs moving to needed locations; oversees operations of loading logs to outside customers; 
  •  Maintains production records; 
  •  Ensures log yard is well maintained, clean and safe. 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES 

Provides work direction to employees in the log yard and ensures that employees follow company policies and procedures, but does not have direct performance appraisal responsibility for them.  

QUALIFICATIONS

Employee must maintain and carry a valid California driver license and remain eligible and capable of operating company vehicles including automobiles and trucks. 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE 

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and five years log scaling experience. Must be proficient in distinguishing various log species and in scaling of redwood logs.  

PHYSICAL DEMANDS 

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to communicate; frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and climb or balance; to occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and to taste or smell. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.  

WORK ENVIRONMENT 

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts; fumes or airborne particles, outside weather conditions, risk of electrical shock and vibration; occasionally is exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; and toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.  

COMPUTER SKILLS 

To perform this position successfully, an individual should be proficient in using MS Excel, MS Word and MS Outlook, customized inventory control software and similar software programs; keyboarding; must have knowledge of scaling computers.
