Forestry Technician (Forestry, Logging & Mill Operations)

The Prospect Park Alliance is currently seeking a Forestry Technician. Reporting to the Natural Resources Supervisor, the Forestry Technician implements and carries out ecological restoration and park maintenance projects in the park and watershed working with other Natural Resources Crew members, students, interns, volunteers, and community members.

Main Responsibilities for the Forestry Technician include but are not limited to the following physical tasks:

  • Invasive plant removal by mechanical and chemical means
  • Installation and maintenance of fencing and erosion control measures
  • Trail management
  • Reforestation planting
  • Safe operation and maintenance of a range of equipment including hand tools, chainsaws, weedwhackers, tractors and other large vehicles.
  • Participation in general park maintenance tasks including garbage collection, snow removal, and occasional pesticide applications

Desired Qualifications

  • BS or higher in Biology, Ecology, Forestry, Natural Resource Management, Fisheries or related field from an accredited university or one year’s field experience in any of the areas of Biology, Ecology, Forestry, or Natural Resource Management.
  • NYS DEC Pesticide Applicator’s License, or ability to obtain one within 6 months
  • NYS Driver’s License
  • NYS Class B CDL Driver’s License in good standing, or ability to obtain one within 6 months.
  • Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and also as part of a team

About the Prospect Park Alliance

The Prospect Park Alliance is a non-profit organization that works in partnership with City of New York and the community to restore, maintain and operate Prospect Park, Brooklyn’s flagship Park. The Alliance cares for the natural environment, preserves historic design, and serves the community by providing public programming and Park amenities. Recently, the Prospect Park Alliance completed Lakeside, the most ambitious project in Prospect Park since its creation. The 26-acre redesign of the southeast corner of the Park features the LeFrak Center at Lakeside, designed by the architects Billie Tsien and Tod Williams in collaboration with the Alliance, which provides seasonal ice skating, water play and a café, as well as the restoration of the surrounding landscape. 

Compensation

The Forestry Technician is a full-time position eligible for benefits including a tax-deferred 403(b) plan. The annual salary for this position is $36,000.
