Forestry Technician (Technologists & Technicians)

The Mowachaht Muchalaht First Nation, located on the West Coast of Vancouver Island, is seeking a motivated and reliable person as their new Forestry Technician.

The Forestry Technician will provide input and guidance to company foresters and engineers regarding community concerns with forest management and work with the MMFN community to address these concerns and provide information regarding development proposals.

This position also incorporates some GIS work along the review and responses to the BC Referrals process.

This is an intensive administrative job with a large amount of paperwork, emails, reports, assessments, meetings and presentations to Community and Council.

The ideal candidate must be very proficient with writing, communications and computer skills.

Training as required will be provided. This is a

1-year term full-time position which may be renewed subject to ongoing funding availability.

Duties:

1) Manage and respond to referrals, permit requests and other forestry related matters.

2) Participate in the ongoing planning, management and operation of MMFN tenures and forestry contracts, ensuring timely recording and reporting of activities.

3) Understand relevant forest operations plans, forest stewardship plan, site alteration permits, cutting permit/road permit plans and any First Nation’s interests impacted or potentially impacted by those planned forest operations.

4) Facilitate meetings and presentations to Council and the community

5) Review and respond to Forest Stewardship Plans, Heritage Inspection Permit applications and Lands referrals.

6) Promote employment and training initiatives for Band members in all phases of forestry, logging and manufacturing.

7) Prepare and submit all reports to funding agencies, governments and to Council and the community as required.

8) Be present at community meetings as required and present updates, reports and answer questions to the Membership.

9) Maintain confidentiality.

Preferred Qualifications:

a) High school diploma plus other academic training or education

b) Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, Outlook and Publisher

c) Excellent communications skills and professional approach

d) Knowledge of the principles and practices of forestry planning and management, and land management issues and legislation affecting First Nations.

e) Knowledge and or proficiency of GUIS mapping software systems.

f) Ability to rapidly respond in writing to a number of inquiries and issues as needed.

g) Strong oral and written communication skills

h) Valid Driver’s license
