Forestry Safety Specialist (Health, Safety & Training)

We have an opportunity for an occupational health and safety specialist with a focus in the forestry industry to join our Industry and Labour Services department in our Richmond office.

 

Industry and Labour Services is a consultative-based department of the Worker and Employer Services division, servicing primarily external client organizations, including employer and labour groups, associations, and other related institutions. Its primary responsibility is to help these groups take an active role in occupational health and safety, which ultimately will help reduce the industry injury rate and claims costs.

 

What you’ll do

Industry specialists take a proactive approach in understanding and analyzing specific industry needs regarding the development of short and long term occupational safety and health strategies. You will undertake strategic prevention initiatives and provide leadership in identifying and implementing innovative occupational health and safety initiatives that support and mobilize industry stakeholders in preventing worker injury and disease.

  • research, recommend, evaluate, and monitor industry related projects and funding proposals
  • develop innovative industry-wide occupational health and safety strategies
  • provide forestry industry and occupational health and safety knowledge, expertise, and guidance to WorkSafeBC staff and stakeholders
  • network and build partnerships with internal and external stakeholders
  • work directly with industry associations, the public sector, and employer and labour representatives
  • exhibit superior verbal and written communication skills, and exceptional organizational skills
  • work directly with WorksafeBC’s certifying partners to ensure the quality of the Certificate of Recognition (COR) program

 

Your experience and educational background:

  • a university degree, diploma, certificate of Qualification (formerly known as a trade qualification or a TQ), in a discipline related to forestry, or health and safety
  • a minimum of nine years of work experience in a position within the field of forestry or timber harvesting, demonstrating a broad knowledge of employer, labour, and workplace safety issues (equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered)
  • proficiency in computer applications, such as word processing and spreadsheet applications
  • working knowledge of occupational health and safety principles and practices and general prevention strategies
  • working knowledge of forestry practices, timber harvesting systems and work processes, and safety issues relevant to forestry workplaces

 

A starting salary of $70,018 plus comprehensive benefits is offered.
