The American Chestnut Foundation (TACF) has a job opening for an entry-level Forester position at its research facility at Meadowview, VA. Founded in 1983, TACF is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization with the mission to restore the American chestnut to our eastern woodlands to benefit our environment, our wildlife, and our society.
The American chestnut was once the dominant hardwood tree species in the eastern U.S. but was killed by an exotic fungus (chestnut blight) during the early 1900s. TACF is developing an American chestnut tree resistant to the chestnut blight and is currently planting and evaluating our first line of potentially disease-resistant trees in our eastern forests.
Duties and responsibilities:
Assist with all aspects of field research and seed orchard management related to the development of blight-resistant American chestnut trees, including tree planting, weed control, fertilization, pesticide application, seed collection and processing.
Coordinate technical activities such as field trial preparation, establishment and measurements.
Oversee nursery activities related to producing containerized chestnut trees.
Manage facility safety programs.
Qualifications:
BS in Forestry
Experience or knowledge of databases and GIS desirable
Ability to obtain a Commercial Pesticide Applicator’s Certification
Ability to travel overnight and work occasional weekends
