Forester (Forestry, Logging & Mill Operations)

General Function:

 Performs day to day forest management functions for Leisnoi timberlands operations.  The Forester will maintain and utilize the corporate GIS database as a resource for forestry operations and other corporate land management activities.

Job Description:

Major Activities (Typical Duties/Responsibilities)

  • Assists Kodiak Operations Supervisor (Supervisor) in operations planning on forest lands.
  • Assists Supervisor in the areas of contract inspection, inventory, harvest preparation, timber harvest operations, road building & maintenance, reforestation, site clean-up, tree stand care & thinning, fuel reduction, firefighting, erosion control, stream enhancement, habitat improvement, recreation maintenance, and property survey.
  • Review Contractor’s harvest operations plans with Supervisor and evaluate methods of Contractor’s planned harvesting of timber with objectives to minimum waste and environmental damage, adherence to contractual terms and federal / state regulations.
  • Assists Supervisor in tasks such as: regeneration plans; contract inspection & oversight for tree planting, site preparation; pre-commercial thinning; fertilization; forest protection; fire prevention and suppression; road monitoring; road gating & access management; recreation management; GIS mapping of forest areas; erosion control, seeding, cone collection, stocking survey, seedling protection, release-vegetation control, predator control, invasive brush control, slash piling, assessments of standing timber volume and future stand growth.
  • Assists Supervisor in tasks such as contract inspection & oversight for road & trail work; in contract preparation, mapping and permitting; in planning, location, design and  construction for roads and trails including road bridge and drainage features; assessment of geotechnical engineering for road and quarry stability; developing GIS mapping of roads, facilities, etc…
  • At the direction of the Supervisor, the Forester will oversee contract operators and work with government agencies, engineers and other subject matter experts on various projects on Leisnoi lands.
  • From time to time, Forester will assist with other duties as assigned, appropriate to this position.

Job Requirements:

Skills/Abilities

  • Sound knowledge and administrative skills specific to forest silviculture, harvesting, protection, accessibility, productivity, and sustainability in forestland management.
  • Sound knowledge and administrative skills in the design, construction, operation and maintenance concerning forest infrastructure (such as roads, logging-transportation systems, bridges, structures, drainage, facilities, trails) specific to forestland management.
  • Sound knowledge and skills pertaining to electronic mapping, spatial data computing, remote sensing, and imagery interpretation specific to forestland management.
  • Understanding of engineering principles and infrastructure effectiveness related to forestland management.
  • Applied knowledge & skills in data recording, instruments, measurements, location, designation, interpretation, inspection, assessment, judgment, planning, monitoring specific to forestland management.
  • Good written & verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and with little on-site supervision.
  • Requires ability to use applied-knowledge to complete the assigned technical tasks which may include: contract inspection, contract preparation, survey & inventory, field measure & record, management plan & design, quality control and appraisal specific to forestland management.
  • Requires skilled use of numerous forestry and engineering instruments, electronic devices, and field data recorders.
  • Possesses a valid driver’s license and ability to obtain license from Alaska DMV.
  • Knowledge of proper and safe communication protocol for safe travel on single-lane forest roads using citizens band radios or other communication devices.
  • Requires physical-fitness and ability to hike often steep forest terrain, climbing over downed trees, while carrying forestry instruments.
  • Requires a basic understanding of log scaling inclusive of volume determination, grade and species.
  • At a minimum, a bachelor’s degree in forestry and / or  engineering and related experience.

Minimum Experience: 5-7 Years

Undergraduate degree or higher in a forest engineering or forestry or the equivalent in actual experience in a management role in a significant business entity.  Demonstrated level of responsibility in applying technical skills in forest lands management.
