Employment Opportunity: Forest Technician / Operations Forester

NW Maine Regional Offices: Clayton Lake, St Just & Ste Aurélie Maine

Employment Opportunity: LandVest Timberland has an opening available immediately for a Forest Technician / Operations Forester position in our NW Maine region. This region comprises over 670,000 acres and is covered from our three District offices noted above. The position is primarily an entry-level operations forester position.

The position requires a person in good physical condition, one who is willing to live on site at the Depot in Clayton Lake or in St Just, and provide a woods ready 4WD pick-up.

Minimal educational requirements are an AS in Forestry.

Experience in northeastern operations and silviculture preferred, but will train a recent graduate if the individual is able to demonstrate they are capable and right for the position.

The successful candidate should also be skilled in computer applications (MS Office & ArcGIS ideally), and be familiar with GPS units &/or digital data recording units and the collection and use of GPS data.

The position will report to the NW Maine Regional Forester Vernon Kelly, or District Forester James O’Malley.

The tasks are summarized as:

  • Work closely with District and Operations Foresters on various aspects of forest operations, harvesting, thinning, planting and herbicide spraying activities
  • Layout of harvest units and marking of timber for harvest
  • Layout of road construction/maintenance activities
  • Implementation of pre and post harvest inventory
  • Maintenance and update of GIS database
  • Property administration: potential to address lease and other recreational use of the managed tracts
  • Maintenance of forest management records
  • Boundary line maintenance
  • Timber cruising
  • Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) compliance, record keeping and monitoring activities
  • Planning and notification of special harvest units (Conservation easements, retention patches and deer yard)
  • Monitoring of maple syrup leases

While it is preferable for the candidate to be bilingual (English & French), it is not a requirement.

The candidate ideally will have a base knowledge of Maine forest regulations.

Having the ability and desire to become a Maine Licensed Forester is preferable but not an absolute requirement.

- Job entails living on site 3-4 nights per week. But that is somewhat dependent on the home location of the successful candidate. A US resident would have to live in the woods all week, while a Canadian resident near the border may be able to commute some days depending on home location and where work is required.

- Must provide a North Maine Woods ready 4WD vehicle (10 ply tires for example), current reimbursement $0.75/business mile, plus an additional Annual Heavy Truck Vehicle Allowance $1500.00

Compensation

- Salary package based on experience and qualifications

- Benefits include medical, dental, 401(K), paid vacation, 11-12 paid holidays & personal days
