POSITION AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
This is a 12-month, 75% outreach, 25% research appointment offered at the rank of Public Service Assistant. This position reports directly to the Dean of the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources (Warnell School). This position is located in the Warnell School in Athens, Georgia. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an active outreach program supported by extramural funding to deliver relevant and current science, policy, and literature-based forest taxation and economics information to the state and region. The successful candidate shall establish a regionally/nationally recognized program in forest taxation and economics outreach and public service specializing in federal income tax treatment of timber income, property tax, and economics. Individuals with experience in applied forest taxation, real property appraisal, and/or economics relevant to southern ecosystems and experience in delivery of high quality adult education and outreach are especially encouraged to apply. The successful candidate also is expected to contribute to the development of the Warnell School’s forest business and forest economics program, advise/mentor undergraduate students, serve on School/University committees, actively participate in professional/scientific societies, and interact and work with the Georgia Forestry Association, Georgia Forestry Commission, and other appropriate forestry groups. The successful candidate will be expected to work closely with the Harley Langdale, Jr. Center for Forest Business at Warnell (www.ugacfb.com)
QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants should hold a graduate or professional degree (MS/MF/MFR/MBA/JD/PhD) beyond the bachelor’s level with a focus in forest taxation, forest economics, forest management, accounting, agricultural economics, business, or a closely related quantitative area of study. We particularly encourage applicants with at least one degree from an SAF accredited forestry program, evidence of a successful outreach program and/or research productivity with the potential to attract external funding, or at least two years of private sector experience in the aforementioned areas. The person must also demonstrate an ability and willingness to collaborate with outreach faculty and work closely with public land management partners, private forest landowners, consultants, county property tax assessors, and other constituent groups, and be able to successfully mentor students.
THE STATE & UNIVERSITY:
Georgia is well known for its quality of life, both in terms of outdoor and urban activities. The University of Georgia (www.uga.edu) is a land/sea grant institution comprised of 17 schools and colleges, and is located less than 90 miles from Atlanta. Enrollment is about 35,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. The Warnell School is a professional school with 57 faculty, 350 undergraduates, and 190 graduate students (www.warnell.uga.edu). The Warnell School offers Bachelor of Science, Master of Forest Resources, Master of Natural Resources, Master of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in the areas of Forestry, Fisheries and Wildlife, Natural Resource Recreation and Tourism, and Water and Soil Resources. The School has a 740-acre (300-hectare) forest less than 10 minutes from campus and 23,000 acres (9,200 hectares) of forestland across the state for teaching and research. The Georgia Cooperative Fish & Wildlife Research Unit as well as a research group from the U.S. Forest Service Southern Research Station (www.srs.fs.usda.gov) is also located on campus.
