Looking for a Forest Management Professional to Lead an Operations Team on Haida Gwaii, BC 

Our client is a privately held Canadian company with a medium sized forest management tenure located on Haida Gwaii (aka the Queen Charlotte Islands), British Columbia. This professional will be a forest technician or a four year forest management graduate with extensive operational experience in rugged West Coast type terrain. The position is largely field-based (75%) and the Forest Operations Supervisor will lead of team of forest operations technicians in all aspects of forest engineering and layout. 

Position Duties and Abilities:

• Lead a team of forest professionals in the implementation of operational plans including road layout and engineering, timber reconnaissance and layout and resource protection as per the Haida Gwaii Strategic Land Use Agreement and the Haida Gwaii Forest Stewardship Plan;
• Ability to tackle complex tasks and work with a minimum of supervision is required;
• Strong leadership skills including communications and interpersonal skills are required;
• Excellent work ethic and ability to work with and motivate others is key;
• Physically capable of performing rigorous outdoor fieldwork;
• A commitment to crew and personal safety is mandatory.

An archipelago of islands, Haida Gwaii, sits between the rugged Hecate Strait and the mainland of British Columbia. Blessed with abundant natural heritage, the islands are covered by a mix of species including Sitka spruce, western red cedar, yellow cedar (Nootka cypress), shore pine, western hemlock, mountain hemlock, and red alder. Education and Qualifications Sought:

• Four year Bachelor of Forestry or Forest Engineering at a recognized institution and/or a two year diploma at a recognized forest technical school; 
• Minimum of 3-5 years of forest engineering background including timber cruising and evaluation, harvest block engineering (under EBM or equivalent is beneficial) and road engineering experience required. Coastal or equivalent forestry experience is highly preferred;
• Eligibility for RPF or RFT status in BC is preferable but not required; 
• Experience in remote work situations in a variety of weather and climatic conditions is mandatory;
• Experience with SFI and ISO 14001 certification programs is beneficial; 
• Work experience in BC is not required but clearly beneficial;
• A commitment to the principles of good forest stewardship and sustainable forest management is mandatory

Full-time / 14 days (including travel time) and 7 days off. Travel: Travel costs to Haida Gwaii are covered by the client & crew can live on or off Island.

 

 

Compensation

$75,000 to $85,000 annually + Benefits
