Position Title: Field Inventory Forester

Work Location: Ukiah, CA

SUMMARY

Performs forest inventory field data collection in coastal Mendocino and Humboldt counties and other locations as assigned. Supervises and trains seasonal forest inventory technicians. Conducts quality control check cruises.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

include, but are not limited to the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Participate in weekly work scheduling;
  • Locate plots by pre-determined GPS coordinates;
  • Conduct field measurements according to inventory protocol;
  • Record data on field data recorder;
  • Perform quality checks and upload field data daily;
  • Supervise and train temporary or seasonal forest inventory technicians;
  • Conduct quality control check cruises.

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES 

A person in this position will train and provide work direction to the seasonal forest inventory technicians but will not have direct responsibility for them.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

BS degree in Forestry is desired. Coursework including forest measurements and sampling, statistics, and forest ecology is required. Knowledge of tree species in northwestern California is required. Two years experience in forest inventory analysis, timber cruising, other closely related biological sampling; or equivalent combination of education and experience desired. Demonstrate proficiency with forest inventory measurement tools; must take consistent, replicable measurements to the level of precision required in the protocol. Must maintain and carry a valid California driver license and remain eligible and capable of operating company vehicles including automobiles, trucks and large 4-wheel drive vehicles in accordance with company policy guidelines. With appropriate training, an individual must be capable of safely and effectively operating (run, maneuver, navigate and drive in various types of territory) all terrain vehicles in accordance with company policy guidelines. To perform this position successfully, an individual must have knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word, Internet software, and Smartphone’s. Knowledge of GPS technology including data formats and conversions essential. Working knowledge of Arc Map highly desirable.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures or governmental regulations. Ability to concisely describe conditions observed in the field, recorded as notes. Ability to write brief reports and business correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to apply mathematical skills pertaining to forest inventory data collection including geometry and trigonometry.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

The travel requirements described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this position. Daily travel in 4WD pickup required to access field locations. Travel via ATV also required. Overnight camping in the field may be required at times.
