Background
The Truck Loggers Association (TLA) is the official voice of independent forest contractors located throughout BC’s coastal region. The TLA’s vision is to be a strong and unifying voice for the coastal forest community. Member companies share a commitment to promote a healthy, working and sustainable forest industry.

Executive Director
Reporting to the President and the Board of Directors, the Executive Director provides the strategic vision, planning and operational leadership to ensure the Association’s membership interests are promoted as a key stakeholder in the growth and development of the coastal forest industry.

The Executive Director has a wide range of responsibilities and accountabilities that contribute to the overall achievement of the TLA’s objectives. The incumbent will provide efficient and effective operational leadership for the day-to-day business of the Association and create a team-based management style within the organization. Utilizing strategic and technical skills, the incumbent has the responsibility to provide leadership through performance-based management principles.

The Executive Director will support and implement the vision for the Association, through effective communications and advocacy. Working in an environment of sometimes conflicting political and stakeholder influence, the Executive Director will maintain a careful balance between industry, societal and member interests.

This position requires a high level of understanding and sensitivity of operational, political, labour relations and public policy issues relating to the coastal forest industry. Providing vision, energy and commitment to advancing the TLA interests and its business model, the Executive Director will work closely with all stakeholders to influence cooperation, increase understanding, and facilitate collaboration towards a common goal—a vibrant and sustainable coastal forest sector to the benefit of the membership.

Responsibilities
Board of Directors
The Executive Director is responsible for ensuring that the Board of Directors has all the information necessary to properly exercise its responsibilities. He/she reports to the Board on a timely basis, on all relevant information regarding the Association’s operations and develops and presents alternatives and recommends courses of action to the Board for its consideration.

Community and Stakeholder Relations
The Executive Director is responsible for establishing and maintaining positive and productive relationships with the media, industry and industry representatives, government organizations, First Nations, stakeholders and communities. In this capacity, the Executive Director serves as primary spokesperson for the Association and promotes collaboration towards achieving a collective vision of prosperity for the coastal forest sector all the while advocating for the Association perspectives and positions.

The Executive Director ensures the effective communication of the TLA’s strategies and objectives to create a positive Association profile, while developing and maintaining positive and productive relationships with high-level stakeholders.

Strategic and Operational Planning
In collaboration with staff and appropriate stakeholders, the Executive Director formulates and makes recommendations to the Board of Directors regarding the annual operating plan. The plan will identify Association and industry issues that must be addressed in order to realize the future vision of the TLA and sets short, medium and long-term objectives and strategies. In support of the annual plan, the Executive Director presents operating budgets to the Board for approval, and has overall accountability for achieving the Board’s objectives. 

Corporate Organization
The Executive Director develops and maintains an effective and innovative organizational structure based on achieving performance objectives that reflect the industry and member requirements. The Executive Director prescribes the authority and delegates responsibilities to staff and contractors and develops an annual list of performance objectives.

In addition to running an effective and efficient organization, the Executive Director is expected to address emerging issues that impact the future direction of the Association and the industry at large.

The Executive Director ensures the development of, and adherence to, operating policies, systems and practices of the Association.

The Executive Director, working with the Association controller, ensures the efficient utilization of financial resources within established policies of the Association, making appropriate and timely financial and management decisions.

The Candidate
The ideal candidate for this exciting leadership position will have a solid understanding of the coastal forest sector and forest policy. Combined with a strong and demonstrated management style, formal business training and industry respect, you will be seen as an industry leader by your peers.

The successful candidate has an excellent track record of working with government and stakeholder groups, developing consensus and effective working relationships with individuals and groups that have led to demonstrated achievements. A strong people manager, you are looking for opportunities where you can apply influence to strategic initiatives in order to build and promote the development of the coastal forest industry to the benefit of the TLA membership.

The successful candidate will have a minimum of eight to ten years’ experience in the resource sector and have a bachelor’s degree with a preference for resource management or forestry. An RPF designation and/or a business designation is an asset.
