TreePeople is currently conducting a search for a Chief Executive Officer to lead the organization as it ramps up to achieve a bold ten-year vision of urban sustainability in Los Angeles. This position will work at the highest leadership level along with TreePeople Founder and President, Andy Lipkis, and current Executive Director Tom Hansen, who is assuming the role of Chief Financial Officer.

TreePeople is an environmental nonprofit whose mission is to unite the power of nature, people and technology to create a sustainable future for Los Angeles. TreePeople is among the largest independent environmental organizations in California. Sustained by a staff of 50 educators, foresters and administrators as well as thousands of trained "Citizen Foresters", TreePeople has played, and will continue to play, a leading role in mobilizing Angelenos, private businesses and government agencies to work together to create a resilient urban infrastructure capable of withstanding the mounting challenges of climate change.

TreePeople's passionate commitment to the environment and its unique implementation model, known as "Citizen Forestry", engage and inspire Angelenos at both the grassroots and policy levels to take environmental action in their communities. Over the next ten years, TreePeople and its Citizen Foresters will spearhead the transformation of Los Angeles' urban ecosystem by:

  • Mobilizing Angelenos into a community committed to adapting the City's resources and infrastructure in response to severe climate change
  • Expanding forestry and education programs that inspire thousands of volunteers to improve the health and safety of Angelenos by planting and maintaining trees in wilderness areas, urban neighborhoods and school campuses
  • Transforming Los Angeles' urban landscape into a living watershed to capture, clean, store and conserve rain and storm water in response to droughts and diminishing resources
  • Fostering collaborative partnerships that bring private businesses, non-profit resources and government agencies together to research, develop and implement system-wide solutions to environmental problems

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION:

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is responsible for the overall successful operation and performance of TreePeople. This includes facilitating the organization's strategic planning, as well as guiding and supervising all day-to-day operations. In general, the CEO must ensure that all necessary financial and human resources are available to support the organization's mission, plans and programs.

Specific Responsibilities Include:

Administration and Finance

  • Fosters collaboration among Senior Managers and staff to ensure effective administration of all programs, finances and facilities
  • Directs the preparation and monitoring of annual fundraising, marketing and financial plans
  • Directs the preparation and monitors the implementation of plans for all programs and services
  • Oversees the management and maintenance of all facilities and properties
  • Monitors all financial management systems to ensure timely and accurate reporting to the Board of Directors, Finance and Audit Committees
  • Monitors the performance of an annual certified audit of the organization's financial position
  • Ensures that human resource policies and practices comply with all laws and regulations

Strategic Planning

  • Works in collaboration with the organization's Founder and President to refine the mission and priorities of TreePeople
  • Facilitates the strategic planning process and the refinement and finalization of the organization's draft strategic plan to advance the organization's mission, define its long and short term goals and provide a guide and measure for current and future operations
  • Directs and oversees the development of the organization's policy positions and governmental activities
  • Oversees and directs the implementation of the organization's long and short term objectives and its strategic plan

Leadership Development

  • Together with the Board Chair and President, provides direction, leadership and motivation for the Board of Directors and Board Committees
  • Works with the Board Chair and President to attract and retain volunteer leadership capable of and committed to advancing the mission and goals of the organization
  • Develops and implements an organizational structure to ensure efficient and professional Board management and support

Fund Development

  • Provides leadership to the fund development program to ensure the financial resources to advance the mission and goals of the organization
  • Participates in key fund development initiatives and major gift cultivation and solicitation

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

The CEO reports to the Board of Directors through the Board Chair. The CEO will oversee staff through a senior management team comprised of the President and Founder, the Senior Director of Programs, the Chief Financial Officer, and the Directors of Policy, Development, Marketing, and Strategy.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The successful candidate should have a demonstrated commitment to environmental causes and experience working in and with the larger environmental community, along with strong organizational, administrative and financial skills. Knowledge of fiscal and budget management is important. Ideally, the CEO should have experience in leading large volunteer based campaigns, on a state or national level, institutional image building, marketing, external relations, and fundraising and have the presence and capacity to move initiatives forward in those areas. The CEO should be a decisive coalition builder who can instill a high level of accountability in team-based decision making. As such, he/she should be diplomatic but decisive and be able to accomplish goals through inspiration, motivation and delegation. The successful candidate should not only possess strong personal communication skills, but should also be able to create an environment that is conducive to open and direct communication. As a leading voice in an organization dedicated to the mission of urban transformation through volunteer action, the CEO must be able to engage, inspire and energize a broad diversity of TreePeople's stakeholders. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated success in fundraising as well as the ability to establish and manage relationships with other non-profit organizations, government agencies and media for the benefit of the organization. TreePeople is a growing and dynamic organization and its CEO must possess a high energy level, and be self-motivated and results-oriented. He/She must possess the interpersonal skills to work effectively with the Board, staff, volunteers and all community stakeholders of TreePeople and must be comfortable being a public spokesperson for the organization. It is essential that the CEO be a person of high integrity.

EDUCATION:

An undergraduate degree is required. Candidates with a Master's degree in science, business or related fields will be given strong preference.

Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be provided. If needed, relocation assistance is negotiable.
