Job Description: 

Academic Rank and Salary: The Forest Resources Management Program in the School of Natural Resources at West Virginia University is seeking to fill a nine-month, tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor. It is anticipated that this position will begin January 1, 2016. Summer salary may be available initially, contingent upon availability of funds, to establish a recognized research program. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Teaching undergraduate courses, specifically, forest mensuration; forest management; and one graduate course in the incumbent's area of expertise; 
  • Plan and develop a research program focused on quantitative forest management issues confronting the central Appalachian forests including, but not limited to forest growth and yield, forest productivity, climate change, biomass and carbon, and forest disturbances; 
  • Develop service activities focused on public and private forestland owners and the natural resource industry of West Virginia. 
  • The incumbent is expected to recruit and mentor graduate students, acquire extramural funding, and to publish research results in refereed research journals.

Qualifications: 

An earned PhD with emphasis in quantitative applications to natural resources and management at the time of appointment, with at least one degree in forestry or forest management from an SAF accredited program are required. Preference will be given to applicants with expertise in quantitative aspects of forest management and ecology, preferably in the areas of growth and yield modeling, empirical and processed based ecosystem modeling, and carbon sequestration. Teaching ability is required.

The successful candidate must be able to effectively communicate with undergraduates, graduate students, professionals in the field of natural resources, natural resource industries, the general public, and other scientists.

A strong record of peer-reviewed publications and demonstrated potential for obtaining and sustaining a research program from external grants are required. The ability to work with interdisciplinary research groups and with natural resource industries within the state are preferred.
