Area Forester (Forestry, Logging & Mill Operations)

Western Forest Products is currently seeking an Area Forester to join our Mainland Coast Forest Operation (MCFO), at our offices based approximately 15 minutes north of Campbell River, BC.

The Role

Reporting to the Operations Planner, the Area Forester is a critical role in Mainland Coast Forest Operation’s Planning Department.  The key functions and responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Provide safety and environment leadership for staff and contractors in the Forestry and Engineering Department
  • Work in a team environment to complete or assist in the full range of forest planning activities required to facilitate an annual cut of up to 300,000 M3
    • Preparation of road and cutblock site plans, including all associated fieldwork and rationales
    • Work with the Area Engineers to ensuring consistency and compliance of development with Forest Stewardship Plans and applicable legislation
    • Assist with the completion of strategic-level assessments and planning
    • Conduct First Nation information-sharing sessions regarding forest development
    • Assist with RESULTS submissions, Forest Stewardship Plan administration
    • Supervise contract forestry and silviculture workers
    • Knowledge of Cenfor would be considered an asset
    • Assist with cutting permit development and harvesting prescriptions
    • Monitor, document and track forest values and constraints associated with legislation, in particular Ecosystem Based Management
  • Highly motivated with effective planning and organizational skills, high personal standards and expectations and a proven ability to work in a team environment
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office and able to produce professional quality documents and plans
  • Have a minimum of 5 years of related experience in the coastal forest industry
  • Must be able to withstand the demands of remote coastal field work, as Western Forest Products’ diverse chart areas extend from Loughborough Inlet north, through to Bella Coola and north of Bella Bella, located in the Mid-Coast region of British Columbia
  • Candidates must be familiar with existing legislation applicable to forest development, including operating under Ecosystem Based Management
