Job Description: 

AmeriCorps members will serve as park programmers at Georgia State Parks, supporting 15 parks located along the coast of Georgia and around metro-Atlanta from August 2015 – July 2016. While serving as park programmers, members will be responsible for creating and providing quality, engaging interpretive, educational and recreational activities and opportunities. Each member will be responsible in leveraging at a minimum of 5 volunteers who will work on specific projects throughout the duration of this intervention. The members will gain an understanding of stewardship ethics and help park visitors make connections to the natural and cultural resources available within the Georgia State Park system. Through the efforts of our AmeriCorps members, we will change community involvement at the parks by targeting the citizens and visitors surrounding the parks, with an emphasis on rural and economically disadvantaged communities. There will be a focus on recreational programs that will provide local communities with more opportunities to engage themselves and their children in the outdoors and instill physical activity habits that will last them into adulthood. Position Description: The GA State Parks AmeriCorps Programming Members essential functions will include, but are not limited to: 

  • Provision of new outdoor recreational, educational, and interpretive programs, varying from Environmental Education, Cultural and Living History, Team Building, Hikes, Outdoor Adventure, and Just for Fun; 
  • Liaison to the local communities surrounding state parks; 
  • Increase opportunities and participation in the volunteer program; 
  • Increase park visitation through outreach and engagement; 
  • Involvement in planning and conducting of special events at the Parks; 
  • Will receive the following training: 1st aid, CPR, archery, canoe/kayak guide certification, playworker, Project Wet/Wild programs, black powder demonstration and naturalist.

Qualifications (General Requirements):

  • Positive attitude; 
  • Good communication and writing skills; 
  • Outstanding customer service skills; 
  • Must be comfortable with public speaking and conducting presentations; 
  • Well-organized; 
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently and with a team; 
  • Basic computer skills; 
  • A desire to learn; 
  • Flexible daily schedule; 
  • Flexibility to work weekends and some holidays. Minimum Requirements/Qualifications: 
  • 18+ yrs of age 
  • U.S. Citizen 
  • Must have a U.S. Driver's license Preferred (but not required)
  • College Degree in Outdoor Recreation, Natural Resource Management, Forestry or Biology or related field.

Miscellaneous: 

Salary and benefits: Stipend, education award and student loan deferment. Housing available. 

Housing: On-site housing to be shared by two members located at Fort McAllister State Historic Park, Crooked River State Park, Fort Morris State Historic Site, and Red Top Mountain State Park. Members will be required to offer programs in their home park as well as in other parks nearby as detailed below. Housing options are decided by members on a first come first serve basis. No rent or utility payment. Furnished houses include heat/air, bedroom, bathroom, shared kitchen and living room with a television.

AmeriCorps members will frequently travel to parks surrounding their home park. You must provide your own linens, towels, & food. Laundry facilities are available.
