Our client's sawmill is located in Ignace and we currently are seeking talent for the role of Woodlands Superintendent.

This job will appeal to a seasoned woodlands specialist that enjoys harvesting operations and the challenges that come with this type of role. This individual will be responsible for advising contractors on how to improve harvesting and delivery operations.

The Woodlands Superintendent will oversee production, delivery and operational planning, coordination and monitoring of wood harvest, road construction and road maintenance supplying pulp/paper mill, and sawmills. The position also involves the supervision of staff and woodlands contracts that deliver approximately 300,000 cu meters to operations.

Your Duties

  • Ensure that the highest Safety standards are met or exceeded throughout the operation
  • Serve as the primary contact and liaison with forest contractors
  • Work cooperatively with all staff and harvest and road construction contractors to maximize operational efficiency and minimize cost
  • Ensure compliance with all governmental and internal standards relative to safety, environment and utilization
  • Implement departmental budgets to ensure good cost control systems
  • Develop annual operating and road plans
  • Maintain continuous improvement program to maximize productivity and efficiency
  • Ensure all employees and contractors are aware of quality specifications for all facilities
  • Ensure product quality (logs, chips & biomass) meets customer needs
  • Ensure compliance with all Collective Agreements and strive for cooperative working relationships
  • Develop good working relationships with all governmental and public agencies, and stakeholders
  • Ensure staff, employees and contractors receive all necessary training and development programs
  • Promote team work within the Woodlands Operations Group

Your Profile

  • Must have recognized forestry training and/or experience or equivalent combination thereof.
  • A university degree in Forestry with Registered Professional Forester (RPF) status or eligibility is an asset but not required.
  • Minimum 5+ years’ experience in forest operations and management
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize tasks
  • Strong budgetary, forecasting and cost management capabilities
  • Excellent communications and interpersonal skills
  • Clear understanding of the legislative requirements affecting forest management and the Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Ability to listen and understand information and ideas and combine pieces of information to form general conclusions and provide management direction
