Our client's sawmill is located in the Abitibi region of Northwestern Quebec and we currently are seeking talent for the role of Woodlands Manager.

Reporting to the Director of Woodlands, this role supervises, coordinates and directs the general operations, safety and compliance and service efficiency of the Forestry and trucking staff.

This division supplies fibre to two sawmills and they utilize about 800,000 cu. metres of crown timber and 400,000 cu. metres of purchased wood. This client strictly adheres to internationally recognized forest management standards to provide their customers with the assurance that the wood fiber that they utilize originates from responsible sources. 100% of our clients manufacturing facilities have a CoC tracking system compliant with the Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI®), the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) or the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®).

Your Responsibilities:

  • Supervise all operations for this division including harvesting, and silviculture
  • Ensure the most efficient use of manpower, equipment and materials
  • Plans, co-ordinates schedules, recruits, trains, evaluates and supervises the staff.
  • Build meaningful community relationships with interest groups and individual residents by acting as a resource to the community.
  • Oversee customer service requirements and handle any related complex issues; maintain a positive corporate image by ensuring prompt and accurate responses to both internal and external inquires
  • Attend meetings and participate in various committees
  • Assist with gathering collating and distributing relevant business documentation and data, including: safety documentation, payroll, purchase orders, preventative maintenance, and other relative business documents
  • Promote staff development and motivation in order to ensure consistent levels of efficiency and growth.
  • Maintain open communication through regular verbal and written reports on current crew status and operations

Your Profile

  • Must have recognized forestry training and/or experience or equivalent combination thereof.
  • A university degree in Forestry with Registered Professional Forester (RPF) status or eligibility is an asset but not required.
  • Minimum 5+ years’ experience in forest operations and management
  • Intimate knowledge of timber harvesting, processing and hauling operations
  • Experience with contract negotiations for logging related services and sale of timber
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize tasks
  • Strong budgetary, forecasting and cost management capabilities
  • Excellent communications and interpersonal skills
  • Clear understanding of the legislative requirements affecting forest management and the Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Ability to listen and understand information and ideas and combine pieces of information to form general conclusions and provide management direction
  • Experience with SFI and ISO 14001 certification programs is beneficial
  • Proven ability building strong relationships with contractors, communities, First Nations and government agencies
  • Candidate must be fully bilingual and must be able to read and write in French
