Position Overview: 
The Urban Forestry Technician will be responsible for all aspects of tree management in a beautiful setting at the head of the Burrard Inlet, amongst an extensive network of trails, green belts and street trees, supplemented with pedestrian routes.  There are over 40 kilometres of trails, most of which pass through parks, along riparian corridors, or on other public land.

Responsibilities:
This position will respond to service requests in all areas of tree management, including hazard tree assessments and maintenance for parks systems, green belts and street trees.  The Urban Forestry Technician will plan, manage and maintain both short and long-term activities for the Urban Forestry and Trails Program as part of the Parks & Environment team.  In addition, this position will work on replanting projects, including public education and grant applications, and will be responsible for contractor coordination, trails staff supervision and administrative responsibilities.

Requirements:
Please note that employment with the City of Port Moody is subject to the receipt of a satisfactory Police Information Check and a satisfactory Driver's Abstract. 

Basic Qualifications:

  • Two year diploma or journeyman certification in Horticulture (or Forestry Technician diploma); university graduation in an arboriculture or forestry program is desirable
  • Certified Arborist (valid ISA Certification) with minimum three years of related experience
  • Considerable knowledge in the establishment and maintenance of trees, pruning, identification of local tree species, pests and diseases
  • Experience dealing with the public and providing good customer service
  • Strong interpersonal, written and verbal skills are essential, as is good judgment, tact and diplomacy
  • Proficient computer software skills in MS Office (experience working with GIS programs is an asset)
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's License with air brake endorsement

Compensation

Compensation - Hourly: $35.41 - $38.13 (2017 rates)
