Job Details:

  • Inventory, inspect and assess trees throughout the urban forest of Peterborough;
  • Assist in the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of urban forestry plans, programs, bylaws, policies, and procedures; 
  • Assist with the research, analysis, and development of technical urban forestry methods and techniques; 
  • Assist the Urban Forest Manager in all urban forestry activities, providing expertise, training, and public education on urban forestry matters.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge and experience normally associated with a 3 year college diploma in Urban Forestry, Forestry or a related discipline;
  • 2-3 years professional experience in tree inspection, tree risk assessment, forest inventory;
  • Significant knowledge of surveying principles and methods as they relate to forestry and the urban forest;
  • Requires advanced knowledge of tree species, soils, pest and disease identification and must be a qualified tree risk assessor (ISA TRAQ preferred);
  • An ISA Municipal Specialist Certification is desirable together with the ability to obtain and be working towards Registered Professional Forester status;
  • A current Pesticide Licence (Licensed Landscape Exterminator or equivalent) would be a definite asset;
  • Ideally the individual should have inventory experience in municipal and commercial environments together with the proven ability to write silvicultural prescriptions, forest management plans and understand tree management as it relates to development;
  • This position requires a working knowledge of municipal tree by-laws and provincial and federal legislation as it relates to urban forestry including knowledge of the Forestry Act and Invasive Species Act in addition to proven communication and presentation skills;
  • Requires an individual who has detailed knowledge of American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Standard A300 Series, International Society of Arboriculture Best Management Practices, Canadian Standards for Nursery Stock; tools, equipment, and materials used in arboriculture and safe work standards and practices;
  • The individual will understand and use various software applications to perform the position’s job functions (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, ArcGIS, ArcPad, Terrasync and Pathfinder).
  • The incumbent must be able to perform the physical requirements of the position and have access to reliable transportation in order to travel to and from work sites and meetings.

Compensation

Salary: $50,444.94 - $53,296.88
