Thermal Systems Engineer - Pulp and Paper (Engineering)

The Thermal Systems Engineer will provide engineering consultation, design, project engineering, project management and construction support for a wide range of paper machine projects. Successful candidate will have extensive experience in pulp and paper manufacturing. 

Responsibilities of the Thermal Systems Engineer – Pulp and Paper

• Technical and economic feasibility studies for the modification/upgrade of existing equipment or addition of new equipment.

• Ability to work independently as a Technical Specialist.

• Ability to give direction and lead a team on larger projects, and to execute the work independently on smaller projects.

• Participate in or lead the development of projects from conception, where the process design basis is established and process alternatives are reviewed, through detailed design, construction, commissioning, startup and optimization.

• Develop Energy Balances of processes and unit operations.

• Develop Process Flow Diagrams and P&IDs.

• Scope, cost estimate and project schedule development and implementation of paper machine related projects.

• Complete independent studies, analyses, interpretations and conclusions.

• Identification and evaluation of qualified consultants, equipment suppliers and contractors.

 

Preferred Knowledge and Skills of the Thermal Systems Engineer – Pulp and Paper

• Tissue Machine – Conventional Wet Press, TAD

• Drying technologies

• Paper machine hood and air systems

• Paper machine dust collection and mist removal systems

• Equipment experience to include steam distribution systems, pumps, compressors, chillers, boilers, cooling towers, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, fans, desuperheaters, and thermo compressors.

• Calculations including but not limited to: pressure relief valve sizing, pipe sizing, pump sizing, valve selection and steam trap selection.

• Pipe stress analysis (static and dynamic analysis preferred).

• Knowledge of HVAC (airside and water side) system application and design codes.

• Ability to work effectively with all levels of personnel from mill operating and maintenance personnel to top corporate management.

• Good understanding of construction methods, and a recognition of good constructability practices. 

Basic Qualifications of the Thermal Systems Engineer – Pulp and Paper

• Bachelor’s degree in Paper Science Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related science or technology.

• Minimum 3 years of relevant industrial experience.

• Experience in project execution and delivery.

• Ability to travel at least 25%.

Preferred Qualifications of the Thermal Systems Engineer – Pulp and Paper

• Professional Engineering registration. (PE)

• 10+ years of experience in the Pulp and Paper industry.

• Experience with Win Gems or similar process modeling tools.

• Experience / knowledge of environmental permitting including Title V, PSD, NAAQS, and NSR programs.
