Salary $47,647.15 - $54,003.55 annually

 

The mission of the Forest Improvement and Research Management Branch [FIRM] is to enhance the value, resilience and conservation of BC’s forest genetic resources. The FIRM conducts research to identify the potential growth, health and adaptability of BC’s tree species. This scientific information guides the establishment of ministry and private seed orchards and the Chief Forester’s Standards for seed use. The Branch manages six seed orchards, two research stations and the Provincial Tree Seed Centre, where all seed used for Crown land reforestation is registered, tested, stored and distributed.

The stand-alone Tree Seed Centre operates as a geographically separated arm of the headquarters Tree Improvement program. As well as being a processing and research facility, the Tree Seed Centre serves as the provincial cone and seed repository for the purposes of reforestation as well as an ex situ gene conservation bank [contingency] in the event of catastrophic losses caused by fire, pests or extreme climate change. For over 60 years, the Provincial Tree Seed Centre’s mission has been “Excellence in Cone and Seed Services”.  The Tree Seed Centre is designated as Mission Critical within the Ministry.

The Testing Technician position is responsible for conducting cone, seed, seedlot and request assessments and testing throughout cone and seed processing, registration, interim and long-term storage, preparation and distribution activities and decision points. 

Qualifications for this role include:

·        Degree or diploma in forestry, agriculture, botany, horticulture or other related botanical field, plus one year of related experience in testing, quality control, research or processing of a botanical product; or, the equivalent combination of education and experience, such as two years of botanical related experience and relevant job training courses.

·        Demonstrated experience working in a production environment involving a perishable product and concurrent operational activities. Preference for experience dealing with tree seeds or seedlings.

 

Compensation

Salary $47,647.15 - $54,003.55 annually
