The Position:

Forestry Corporation is currently seeking an experienced and motivated individual to take on the vital role of Supervising Forest Officer Western Land Leases. This position is part of the Red Gum District of our Western Region which is an isolated operational unit that requires an individual capable of managing a diverse range of works, implement policy and directions locally while at the same time holding full authority to deal with staff, customers, stakeholders and the like.

The SFO will be responsible for undertaking supervision and management of timber harvest operations on crown timber lands within the Balranald area to ensure compliance with the required environmental and safety standards. Participate in hazard reduction burning and firefighting up to Group Leader level. Additionally the SFO will Liaise & negotiate with lessees, permittees, contractors and neighbours.

The ideal candidate will be self-driven and enjoy working in a dynamic and fast paced environment, they will also ideally possess the following skills, qualifications and experience:

  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team yet with a high level of independence, including developed decision making and organising skills and demonstrated capacity for innovative thinking and problem solving.
  • Ability to readily recognise an array of dynamic priorities and, in the context of day-to-day circumstances, effectively balance them through planning and adjusting activities to meet deadlines, standards and budgets.
  • Demonstrated well-developed interpersonal and communication skills demonstrating experience in conflict resolution, negotiation and the ability to deal with stakeholders involved with the position (including staff, contractors, industry, neighbours, government regulators and the community).
  • Demonstrated experience in managing external contractors to ensure compliance to the operating rules
  • A sound, practical understanding of native forest management. In particular: (a) Silviculture, fire management and cultural heritage management, (b) relevant timber industry legislation.
  • Well-developed technical skills in: (a) map reading, navigation, GPS usage, (b) computer usage, literacy, numeracy
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage safety in the work place and demonstrated sound safety leadership.
  • Capacity and willingness to undertake fire and fuel management duties, fire fighting and extensive travel (mainly driving), work extended hours, and to maintain sufficient fitness for the job (e.g. able to efficiently conduct reconnaissance / investigation through difficult terrain and dense vegetation) and a current drivers licence.
