Position Announcement:

Position Available: Staff Forester, LandVest Timberland Office in Newport, Vermont

LandVest is looking for an energetic, entrepreneurial, and dedicated professional for an entry/mid-level Staff Forester position in our Newport, VT Regional Office. This office provides forestry consulting services to a significant client list with a wide range of property sizes and ownership objectives. LandVest’s Vermont Forestry Office provides a nearly 40-year presence in successfully helping private landowners. Depending on the individual, the position will initially involve primarily field work focusing on inventory and harvest operations, working closely with other LandVest foresters. As the candidate gains experience, responsibilities will grow to include preparing forest management plans, developing and maintaining client relationships, and generating new business.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Operations: Field work involves planning and laying out harvest units, marking timber, inspecting active harvest operations and harvest closeout, maintaining timber sale records, and collecting GPS data.

• Inventory: Inventories involve collecting field data, following LandVest cruise protocols, and preparing cruise reports.

• Regional Projects: Occasional travel in the Northeast US to participate in regional projects.

• Other Field Work: Includes boundary work and other assigned field tasks.

• Office: Management plan development, project administration, and other required office tasks.

• Other: Over time, the successful candidate will be expected to serve as a primary client contact, generate new projects, and develop relationships with new clients.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Forestry from an SAF accredited program. Associate’s degree may be considered with minimum 3 years’ experience.

• Excellent communication skills - verbal and written.

• Harvest operations related field experience (planning, layout & supervision).

• Ability to demonstrate a strong knowledge of the implementation of northern hardwood & spruce-fir silviculture, use of silviculture guides and their implementation into management plans & operations.

• Timber cruising and inventory skills. Experience with handheld data collectors’ a plus.

• Strong computer skills in most elements of Microsoft Office; GPS and introductory GIS skills.

• Knowledge of the VT Use Value Appraisal program a plus.

• Consulting forestry positions often require long days and occasional week-end work, outdoors year-round in all weather conditions.

Pay and Benefits:

• Salary commensurate with experience and demonstrated skills.

• Incentives paid for generating new work and meeting budgets (profit sharing).

• Successful candidate must provide a reliable 4WD vehicle. LandVest reimburses mileage for the use of personal vehicles.
