Senior Grower - Forest Nursery (Silviculture & Reforestation)

The Silvagro Partnership specializes in the production of containerized seedlings for reforestation purposes.

We are currently looking for a grower for our Quesnel division.

Responsibilities include:

  • Responsible for crop layout, growth curves and crop plan
  • Develop all aspects of the cultural program including: developing the cultural program, directing staff to implement all aspects of the cultural plan.
  • Develop all aspects of the Integrated Pest Management (IPM). Grower must have a Pesticide applicator certificate.
  • The grower must have a clear understanding of the Argus System (Argus Environmental Control System).
  • The grower must monitor the crop for nutrient requirements and morphological issues. Ensure that the crop meets client specifications.
  • The grower will supervise and train all growing staff and ensure they understand and can implement all cultural practices.
  • Ensure that crop data is being collected and information is provided to the Site Manager. This would include: Inventories, growth progression and storability data.
  • Quality standards for sowing and lifting and cold storage
  • Organize potting trials
  • Organize and maintain all culture data.
  • Maintain the Crops at Risk Board. It is the responsibility of the grower that there is a plan of action for any crop at risk. Any Crops at Risk must be reported to the Superintendent.
  • The grower works in coordination with the Superintendent on staffing needs for growing or any operational activities required by the crop. The grower will train staff for cultural related activities.

Education and Licensing Requirements:

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in Agriculture or Horticulture
  • Record-keeping experience
  • Three to five years’ experience working in a greenhouse environment, preferably with conifer crops

Working Conditions: Generally works 40 hours per week, but may be expected to work overtime when necessary. Early morning, evening and weekend work may be necessary. Works inside and outside during extreme weather conditions in a dusty environment. Involves standing, bending, lifting and carrying.
