POSITION PURPOSE

This is a full-time position which works out of the NW Timberlands Division located in Shelton, WA and reports directly to the Resource Forester. The Security Forester provides security in the protection of Green Diamond Resource (GDRCo) lands, logging equipment, and other property.  Duties will include coordination of investigations and preparation of cases for legal prosecution, enhancement of security through coordination of GDRCo and local law enforcement agency activities, and any other intensive forest management (IFM) activities as assigned.  Other IFM duties may include but are not limited to: forestry operations, tree surveys, animal damage control, firefighting, road maintenance activities etc. The Security Forester duties will change seasonally.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: (other duties may be assigned)

  • Assures a safe workplace.  Takes personal initiative and an aggressive responsibility to insure ongoing safe behaviors through implementation and active participation in the safety program with a goal of no recordable accidents.  Develops, implements, and facilitates safety elements to support the Divisions Injury and Illness Prevention Plan (IIPP).
  • Patrols ownership to assure protection against timber and minor forest product theft and vandalism of logging equipment and other assets.  These patrols should be conducted as not to develop a routine.  In particular, time will be scheduled for most weekends and holidays as necessary, as a result “On Call” hours will be required.
  • Coordinates investigations of criminal trespass, theft, misdemeanors, felonies and violations of policy.  Under the direction of the Resource Forester, responsible for preparing the background and evidence to aggressively seek prosecution by the various judicial systems.
  • The Security Forester may assist in the investigation of fatalities, serious injuries, fires and property damage incidents which occur on GDRCo property.
  • Responsible for fostering and maintaining a cooperative working relationship with the various departments within NW Timberlands, local law enforcement agencies (federal, state, county, tribal and city) other timber companies and adjacent landowners in order to enhance Green Diamond’s security policies and investigations.
  • Responsible for answering requests from the public who wish to use GDRCo lands for various recreation activities, determines if requests conform to Land Use Policy, write access permits and obtains liability release agreements from participants.
  • Called upon to provide professional advice and/or technical expertise on security needs to other departments.  Participates as needed on the Land Use Committee to provide law enforcement and security related professional advice and expertise for the committee.
  • Participates in the development and enforcement of the Timberland’s Public Access Policy. Maintains the security gates/locks on the road system and advises as to additional gating needs or blocking of roads by other means.  Works with logging to identify roads requiring C.B. signage and signage informing the general public of access policies and operational activities.
  • Assists in fire protection activities (especially closure signs) on ownership during the critical fire danger season.  The Security Forester will participate in fire watch duties, equipment operation and trainings and will respond when requested to fire incidents.
  • Makes decisions on an independent basis within the framework of established policies and is accountable for them. Cooperates with local agencies on search and rescue operations and other law enforcement operations on GDRCo lands.
  • Works independently without direct supervision.
  • Assists as appropriate, to conduct tree stocking surveys, Pre-commercials thinning audits, animal damage surveys, roadside spraying flagging/monitoring and any other forestry duties that are identified by the GDRCo Resource Forester . 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • A four year degree from  an accredited university in Natural Sciences, Silviculture, Geology, Forestry, Biology, Civil Engineering, Criminal Justice or any other closely related field of study.
  • Current commission as a peace officer from the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission (WSCJTC), and/or has retired from a law enforcement agency in the State of Washington and is in good standing.
  • Current on all training and testing necessary for Law Enforcement Firearms qualification (must be tested on an annual basis).
  • Valid Washington State driver’s license.
  • Five (5) years of law enforcement experience as a certified peace officer with emphasis in criminal investigation. 
  • Familiarity and knowledge of state laws, especially those pertaining to forest products.
  • Highly developed communication skills including the ability to deal with the general public concerning a multitude of uses, legal and illegal.
  • Ability to work with all levels of the operation and with public law enforcement agencies.
  • Must be a self-starter, able to work independently and alone in the field, establish own agenda and require little supervision. 
  • Ability to interact positively and productively (through written and verbal communications) across functions within the organization, with in the Sales and Marketing department and with key external contacts.
  • Ability to anticipate, identify, quantify, and resolve problems in a timely and positive manner, viewing obstacles as opportunities to learn and grown.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES DESIRED:

  • A four year degree from  an accredited university in  Natural Sciences, Forestry, Biology, Civil Engineering,, Criminal Justice or any other closely related field of study.
  • Knowledge of current forestry regulations and reforestation methods.
  • Knowledge on identifying animal damage in reproduction forest.
  • Knowledge of animal trapping and control methods.
  • Certification as a WDFW Nuisance Wildlife Control Operator.
  • Possession of  WA ST Private Pesticide Applicators License.
  • Possession of a Class B Commercial Driver’s License.
  • Experience using Microsoft Access, Word & Outlook.
  • Knowledge of Washington Fish and Game regulations, Vehicle Code, Penal Code.
  • Current First Aid and CPR training.
  • Fluency in Spanish.
  • GIS Certification

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Able to work long, non-standard hours including weekends.
  • Ability to orient, climb, and traverse steep rugged, densely vegetated terrain on a consistent basis in in sometimes harsh weather conditions for long periods of time.
  • Must have the ability to see distance and detail with accuracy.
  • Must have good hearing ability.
  • This position requires the individual to conduct repetitive physical tasks including lifting, pushing and pulling rocks; and squatting and bending for extended time periods of time (e.g. up to 8 hours).
  • Must have ability to work independently and without immediate supervision in remote areas.
  • Works in conditions that may expose employee wildlife encounters, poison oak and/or insect bites.
  • Must have a good judgment of safety to eliminate risk when working in the field and operating a motor vehicle.  Requires the use of standard safety equipment in regulation with GDRCo.
  • Ability to tour logging operations, attend training and GDRCo functions.
  • Must maintain punctual and regular attendance and present appropriate professional appearance at all times.
  • Requires the use of standard safety equipment in regulation with GDRCo.
