Seasonal Forestry Technician - Summer 2018 (Technologists & Technicians)

The City of Eagan is now hiring a Seasonal Forestry Technician for Summer 2018!

SEASONAL FORESTRY TECHNICIAN - Rate of Pay $13.331 to $15.428 per hour, DOQ

POSITION SUMMARY:  This position will be responsible for assisting with a variety of forestry and landscaping related tasks including ground preparation, planting, mulching, tree trimming and removal, watering, fertilizing, and general maintenance. 

Anticipated start date is May (flexible) and position will run through the peak season of October. Occasional hours may be needed in April and November (before and after peak season) which is dependent on weather/business needs. Employment will last no more than 6 months. 

In this position you will:

1. Perform any combination of the following duties:

    •    Pruning and care of shade and ornamental trees and shrubs

    •    Assisting with installation of park landscape plantings

    •    Removal of dead trees from public property

    •    Clearing and brush work for new parks and trails, chipping brush

    •    Mulching and irrigating trees

    •    Assisting with prairie management

    •    Assisting with Tree Inventory Program

2. Safely operate the following equipment:

    •    Chain saw

    •    Skidster loader

    •    Small tractor or loader with various attachments

    •    Brush chipper

    •    Tree spade

    •    Variety of hand tools

    •    Other forestry related equipment

OTHER POSITION FUNCTIONS:

    •    Assist other city departments as assigned

    •    Miscellaneous tasks related to City forestry and park operations, other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    •    Ability to perform all the essential position functions

    •    Must have valid Driver’s License

    •    Must be able to communicate effectively with co-workers and the public

    •    Must be physically capable of performing the assigned tasks and be willing to work in a variety of weather conditions

    •    Must be neatly groomed and willing to wear and maintain a City issued uniform

    •    Must be able to lift 70 pounds and work in a variety of weather conditions

    •    Must successfully pass a pre-employment background check

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:    

    •    Significant experience in forestry or landscaping

    •    Associates degree or certificate in forestry or horticulture

WORKING CONDITIONS:     95% field                     5% Maintenance Facility

Must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions experienced in Eagan during the months of April through November.  Weather conditions encountered may include heat, cold, rain, snow, sleet, wind, etc.

HOURS OF WORK: 

    •    Normally 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday

    •    Average 40 hours per week during peak season, occasional hours during April and November (before and after peak season). Schedule may be shifted to include weekends or evenings as determined by the work load or assignment.
