Halo Sawmill is a part of the Delta Cedar Group of Companies located on the north side of the Fraser River in Pitt Meadows, BC just south west of the Pitt Meadows International Airport and less than 50 kilometers east of Vancouver.  Pitt Meadows offers very affordable housing costs relative to the rest of the Greater Vancouver Regional District.

Halo is a custom cut sawmill with a great reputation for delivery superior custom cut services to breakdown primarily old growth coastal species for a broad cross section of forest products companies, some with their own assured fibre supply and others dependent on purchase logs or strategic partnerships with log brokers.

This opportunity will be of interest to a young, but experienced sawmill operating millwright (minimum of 10 years), who has demonstrated leadership capabilities and a keen interest to come along side a team of operating millwrights, earn their respect and motivate/challenge them toward continuous operating improvement at Halo.

Maintenance Lead Hand Profile 

Responsibilities

  1. Manage Safety Practices
  2. Plan, Supervise & Work with Weekend Contract Maintenance
  3. Perform Shift Operating Maintenance Functions
  4. Support Further Maintenance Crew Development
  5. Provide Relief for the Maintenance Supervisor 

Tasks by Responsibility 

Manage Safety Practices

  • Personally models safe work practices.
  • Instruct, monitor and correct employees/contractors concerning safety standards, hazards & safe work practices, i.e. PPE, lock out, housekeeping & mill evacuation.
  • Inspect the physical plant and take corrective action for all unsafe conditions.
  • Conduct JSA reviews and crew safety meetings.
  • Report and investigate all injuries to the Maintenance Supervisor. 

Plan, Supervise & Work with Weekend Contract Maintenance

  • Receive instructions from the Maintenance Supervisor for weekend maintenance priorities.
  • Identify the scope of priorities, develop work plan and assemble/order parts.
  • Ensure areas requiring weekend work are prep to enable contractors to go to work.
  • Become familiar with contract crews – the experience, strengths and weaknesses.
  • Assign projects and align crews with their prior experience at HALO.
  • Work with contract crews and monitor progress of each project.
  • Ensure all equipment worked on is started, tested and ready to operate on Monday. 

Perform Shift Operating Maintenance Functions

  • Respond to operating mechanical issues with other operating millwrights.
  • Troubleshoot issues and provide effective short-term solutions to enable the mill to run.
  • Track and prioritize maintenance issues and include in weekend maintenance list. 

Identify & Develop Crew Capability

  • Assess skills of current maintenance team and support Maintenance Supervisor in improving their knowledge and skills.
  • Assign specific millwrights to particular areas and build capacity to troubleshoot and more effectively maintain equipment in those areas. 

Provide Relief for the Maintenance Supervisor

  • Capacity to relieve the Maintenance Supervisor for vacation
  • Enable the operation to implement a preventative maintenance program and a spare parts inventory system 

Qualifications 

Knowledge & Skills

  • BCTQ Millwright “Red Seal” Interprovincial Certification
  • Knowledge of sawmill breakdown and efficient production (preference).
  • Strong knowledge of sawmill equipment and machinery including hydraulics, valves, pumps, pneumatics, cylinders, conveyers, bearings, seals, drives, sprockets, belts and chains etc.
  • Capable welding skills
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Excellent multi-task capability with the skill to set and adjust priorities.
  • Strong English oral, reading and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills (listening, questioning etc.).
  • Computer skills, i.e. spread sheet & data base management

Compensation

Salary: $35.00/Hourly
